Or perhaps calling less QB powers
The designed QB runs aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I said it all off season in here. Folks just don't want to accept it. It is one of the reasons why we drafted him. Fans may not like it but it is what it is.
Folks don't want to accept it cuz in a sense it's stupid. They mentioned it in the broadcast with neutral announcers. They said do you really want this guy you invested all this in to be mixing it up with NFL front sevens. There are ways to run him without heavy contact. QB power isn't one of them imo. Steve Young addressed this yesterday on KNBR. He said in college he can stiff arm defensive tackles.. and do that type of stuff.. not anymore at the NFL level.
Folks can think its stupid all they want but it isn't going to change anything.
Bump for reality slapping you in the face. It was not unpredictable. Above was discussed last week.
Hell it happened in AZ last year. Except this time Kyle had more time to create a better game plan for him. I don't want to hear the "What if he threw interceptions" He didn't even get a chance to prove himself. Not a fair assumption at all.
When you think about it, Shanahan has always spoke about his vision for a QB that could be involved in the run game. We didn't realize it, but Shanahan's plan was ALWAYS to run Trey. This isn't a case of Shanahan not trusting Lance to throw the ball, but rather, he wanted to challenge teams with a running scheme that teams had to consider not only the RB, but Deebo... and Trey Lance. And I see the logic in it... This scheme got Deebo a 50 yard run just a couple plays before. And you can bet that as Trey grew as a passer, as Shanahan grew in better predicting the opponent's playcalling, it would've developed into a very lethal run scheme over the course of the season and onward.
UNFORTUNATELY, and I think it's the criticism everyone's pointed out---running your 225 lb. QB between the tackles consistently is going to expose him to major injuries. Sure, there are QB's like Lamar Jackson running around, but he's doing it on the perimeter. Sure, Josh Allen and Cam Newton run QB Power, but Newton is 250-260 lb, Allen is 240 lb. and he's earned defenses' respect with his throwing ability.
We'll be competitive this year... we should be able to make the playoffs with this roster with Jimmy at the helm... but this is setting us up to a very awkward offseason next year when it comes to our QB situation.
