2017 Team Information (Needs)

If four QBs go in the top eight it will drop some very nice players to the #9 spot. Other than that it looks like Davenport and Landry will be moving up a bit toward the niners spot. I'm looking forward to the draft...even more than usual!

My biggest concern for the team and its needs is Edge rusher. Yes we need O line help and DBs bad but it looks like we will have sources for that help in both Free Agency and the Draft should we play our cards right. But we need help getting to the QB. No team is successful on defense if they cannot pressure the QB. And it just seems like no one is available in Free Agency and last year and this year we position ourselves too low for the top tier pass rushers (Garrett, Chubb) and too high for the next tier of pass rushers. So we find ourselves right in that not so sweet spot where we can't generate pass rush and can't find a place to get guys who can. In all other areas we can compensate/compete, but in this one are we seem to be coming up empty handed. It just happens to be the one area outside of Franchise QB that you have to find in order to be successful.

Look at Jacksonville. For all of the talk about how successful they were last year in Free Agency people keep talking about the corners they signed. But all year that defense was called Sackosnville for a reason. An in the Super Bowl, neither defense could stop anything all game, except the difference between a Lombardi Trophy and what could have been, was a strip sack of Brady late in the game.

So where are we going to get our edge rushers to set up the rest of the defense and take this team to the next level?

I agree. I don't see the 49ers trading up for either Chubb or Barkley either. Unless they drop pretty close to the 9th pick. If four QB's go in the top 8 and you have Chubb or Barkley also going in the top 8, you have 6 picks accounted for and only two unknowns. If those two unknowns go before Chubb or Barkely, I think it would be too tempting to trade up and get either one. I'd love to trade down and get a couple of extra lower round picks and still get the edge rusher they want, whether that be Arden Key, Landry or Davenport. Barkely's speed would be too much to ignore by Kyle, and Chubb is one of this year's elite pass rusher and I think JOhn Lynch would give his right arm to get him, if you give him half a chance. This is a critical draft for the 49ers - as critical as the 2011 draft or the 1986 draft, this will set the tone for the rest of the decade if they hit a home run draft.

Good points! If four QBs go along with Chubb and Barkley then the following players will be available from seven down:

OG Nelson
LB R Smith
DB Fitzpatrick
SS James

I could see the niners liking any of those players, with James being odd man out due to SS being a lesser need. Of course they''d take him if he was BPA I believe.

Then there are several really interesting groups:

WR: Ridley, Sutton, Washington, Ateman...all may be targeted, but there are some really good WRs later in the draft if they don't fall in love with any of these guys.
OT: Miller, Williams and Brown (though the latter may have dropped out of the running given his shoddy combine)
CB: Jackson, Ward, Oliver
LB: Smith, Edmunds, Davenport, Landry, O'Daniel, Vander Esch

So if the niners don't love one of the top guys there are plenty of guys they could take while dropping back. These are just a few off CBS's board and guys who are climbing back up--Landry, Davenport, etc.

It's ok guys, we're still a little over $66.624M under the 2018 cap, and that's before any potential credits. The NFLPA should release that within the next few days.
