NC, thanks for the nice summary of guys available for different positions. Last yr we figured out which FAs we could get, and then FA time, we got creamed. NADA. Well, this yr we don't have our QB out there dissing us, we don't have a zero or an "objectionable" HC, we have the very best in the business of up and comers...one who darn near coached a W in the SB. (Their D lost it, but so did Quinn on his last series from the 20). We also no longer have baalke nor chip/tomsul. Our F.O finally looks desirable, PLUS we got $$$$$.
In any event, i am getting really pumped about this yr, in that if you look at O, we got a very nice OL, altho we could upgrade at C, even tho kilgore and zane could cover it. But staley is a rock, Garnett now has a full yr under his belt, Tiller-Brown are a tough twosome...just need upgrade at C...but we COULD go with what we have and still do okay.
So OL looks good
TEs. McD had a breakout yr, and his counterpart was average...but both are great blockers...and that is incredibly good for us.
So Ok at TE, could use one to improve, but is serviceable.
WRs...our #1 is really a #2, but OTOH, he hardly got any targets. Kerley and streator, our Wal mart and used auto sales guys, ended up like we knew what we were doing.
WRs...either need a #1, or our new QB targets Torrey a lot more. Our #2 and #3 are very workable. And as it turns out, our #1 actually should be our slot.
RBs....Carlos is great...when healthy. We need another for his down times, but moreso to shoulder the load. Also, i would really like a FB to lead Carlo thru the hole. Miller was perfect until he screwed up. So help needed here.
QB...in QB thread i made a case for making it without Cousins, and without one of top 3 QBs taken early. Peterman later, but not too late, rd 2 early. Mahomes is in there but not top choice. This one, QB....this is the essence of how we do this yr, but Kyle does the choosing, and the coaching, so i think we are in really good hands. God help us on the choice, however, plus another later pick as insurance......This is our big ???
Next D:
DL...with AA healthy and DeFo healthy, together 1+1 = 3 Now put an impact NT between them, and we got one helluva DL . True playing 4/3 and 3/4 we got Blair and Dorsey, but that NT....man that the biggest need on D.
LBs. ...whew...will Bow be ready, and if so ok? I bet against it. We need an IMPACT ILB, OLB. Both. And if Bow comes around all the better.
DBs...with all the picks here in high rounds, we still aren't there. We need two DBs, one should be an IMPACT CB.
And that is it. Same old story:
NT
ILB
OLB
FR QB
WR
RB.
I think kyle figures out the FR QB deal. And i think we get an impact player with our second pick unless some team wants it bad and buys it for a 1,2 and 3, plus a 2 next yr. Maybe more if they are really crazy. All bets are off is Kyle's choice is Trubisk. Then we don't get an impact player in draft.
As for the rest, let's just hope we don't get mauled by another FA like last yr(highly unlikely in my mind), and that we slop into a couple Impact guys as noted above. It would seem between kyle/lynch, $$$, FA And Draft, we should be able to get 3 of the 6 we need and maybe 4 or 5 of them, QB being the most critical. But i don't see this yr as SF being a 4 letter word to FAs. This yr i think we draw some.
Yeah buddy! Let's build this thing...
I'll go right down the line on some wishful thinking --- in the draft we go with a minor trade-back and stay inside the top 6 (Jets):
Draft = 5: XWR Mike Williams, LEO/RDE Taco Charlton, LG Forrest Lump, QB Nathan Peterman & RB Wayne Gallman
(Free Agency = 16): QB's Brian Hoyer & Mike Glennon, XWR's Kenny Britt & Rod Streater, YWR's Taylor Gabriel & Jeremy Kerley, ZWR Adam Thielen, FB Patrick DiMarco, C Joe Hawley, RG Andrew Tiller, DE Andre Branch, LDT Brandon Williams, SAM Malcolm Smith, WLB's Kevin Minter & Gerald Hodges and RCB A.J. Bouye
Offense --- 26
QB: (Brian Hoyer); (Mike Glennon) & Nathan Peterman --- The Kaepernick era is over. No doubt, ShanaLynch will go hard for both Kirk Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo but it will probably be to no avail. Therefore, they go the safer "bridge" route where we are able to acquire Brian Hoyer & Mike Glennon in free agency and draft Nathan Peterman in the 3rd round.
RB1: Carlos Hyde; Wayne Gallman --- Nice backup to Hyde here via the draft.
RB2: DuJuan Harris --- ShanaLynch resign Harris to play a similar role as Coleman in ATL.
FB: (Patrick DiMarco) --- Who better for Kyle's offense?
TE: Vance McDonald; Garrett Celek & Blake Bell --- ShanaLynch likes this group for now and wants to see what they can do in his WCO.
XWR: (Kenny Britt); Mike Williams & (Rod Streater) --- ShanaLynch go hard in free agency for wide receivers and get their men. Kenny Britt will play a prominent role in this offense as will Taylor Gabriel. They also resign Streater. But the first pick of the ShanaLynch era goes to, Mike Williams. ShanaLynch don't play when it comes to WR's.
YWR: (Taylor Gabriel); (Jeremy Kerley) --- Kerley is a must resign and they lock him up. But it doesn't end here. Shanahan has strong ties to Taylor Gabriel and he acquires him to play the slot and outside as well.
ZWR: Torrey Smith; (Adam Thielen) --- An under-the-radar signing of Adam Thielen flips our WR core into a legit, diverse group.
LOT: Joe Staley; John Theus --- Legit
LG: Forrest Lump; Zane Beadles --- ShanaLynch draft Forrest with their 3rd pick who has played C, G, & T
C: (Joe Hawley); Daniel Kilgore --- ShanaLynch go for a veteran C in Hawley.
RG: Joshua Garnett; (Andrew Tiller) --- ShanaLynch resign Tiller.
ROT: Trenton Brown --- ShanaLynch want to see the big cat in this system.
Defense --- 24
LDE: Arik Armstead; Aaron Lynch & (Andre Branch) --- Lynch is best on the left side and settles in there and ShanaLynch makes a small splash with Andre Branch who will rush from both sides of the DL.
LDT: (Brandon Williams); Quinton Dial --- ShanaLynch sticks to their word on wanting to stop the run and gets the best NT in Brandon Williams in free agency.
RDT: DeForest Bucker --- It's on!
RDE/LEO: Taco Charlton; Ronald Blair & Eli Harold --- Time to get after that QB!
SAM: (Malcolm Smith); (Gerald Hodges) --- ShanaLynch bring in a familiar LB to this Seattle defense and Hodges is a nice resigning (4th best on PFF).
MLB: Navarro Bowman; Nick Bellore --- Here's to never having to see Bellore as a starter again (ST only).
WLB: (Kevin Minter); Ray-Ray Armstrong --- Nice young player in Minter and quality depth with Ray-Ray.
LCB: Rashard Robinson; Dontae Johnson --- It's all about jam-press now!
RCB: (A.J. Bouye); Keith Reaser --- ShanaLynch make the biggest splash in free agency here.
SLOT/CB: Will Redmond --- Finally healthy and ready to lock down the slot.
FS: Jimmie Ward; Marcus Cromartie --- Jimmie is finally moved to his natural spot; plays lots of single-high S.
SS: Jaquiski Tartt; Eric Reid --- This battle in the off season comes down to the wire with Tartt winning as the enforcer.
Not bad, but it's Forrest Lamp, not Lump , Also Gabriel is a RFA, and will likely get either the 1st or 2nd rd tender, as he was a UDFA, might be hard to pry him away from Atlanta.
I have a tough time believing we sign 16 FAs, would be nice though. I personally like the idea of retaining Kerley, Hodges, Dawson, adding Brandon Williams from BAL, DiMarco from ATL, Kevin Zeitler from CIN(Move Beadles to C), Melvin Ingram from LAC to play the LEO position, and a CB like Bouye. As for QB I like Hoyer if we can't get Cousins, which I doubt it happens, unless we give up pick #2.
Now that we're moving to a 4-3, I see the changes looking like this.
Armstead is a DE
Buckner a DT
Dial a DT
Harold a LEO/DE
Tank a LEO/DE
Blair a LEO/DE
Lynch a LEO/DE
Bowman from ILB to MLB
Armstrong from ILB to OLB
Ward from CB to S
Tartt from LB/S to S
Meaning we cut Brooks, Bethea, and Brock, I don't see the need for any of them now, Brooks might stick since his base salary de-escalated by $2.5M, so he's a little more affordable now.
I'm torn on the draft, I want Garrett at 2, but he should go 1st, and I'd love to add Ingram from LAC, solving the LEO/DE spot.
So, I wouldn't mind a Safety like Adams or Hooker, a WR like Williams or Davis. Before we were moving to a 4-3, I would have said Reuben Foster to go next to Bowman at ILB, but now not so much.
We'll see, should be fun, free agency begins March 9th 4PM EST/1PM PST
Man, two great posts , back to back. First off , nice job NC, and ABs 4-3 redo is kinda interesting in that we look to be way better situated for 4-3 than 3-4. With 3-4 we have to have one player in particular and that is an impact NT. AB's lineup (with no upgrades) sure looks a lot stronger than what we would put out there with a 3-4.
Ok, 2 names: Bouye, Taco. That would make this D look so much better, it is hard to fathom. Looks to me just right. Before that tho, i hate trading down from an impact player, but likely our first choice goes to Cleve....UNLESS....
CLEVE figures it all out and realizes their chance for the future is with the WINNER, Watson. Almost beat the national champs in final game in 2015 and DID beat Ala the pre game favorite in 2016..,.and Watson played lites out....had a lot of help tho, from a couple all star receivers. In any event, Cleve once again with the 1st rd pick, fools everyone and take Watson. They know he won't be there at #12.
Ok, maybe that is Fantasy, but last yr they traded out of Wentz at #1, and should have stayed with him. So this yr they get another chance, and do you think they are gonna miss the best QB 2 yrs in a row? Nope. They go Watson. Why not Trubisk? Just not enough shiny ornaments on him. Watson is the jetmobile, shiny spinners on the wheels, double whip antennas, and a 454 under the hood that gets you from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. They just CAN'T PASS HIM UP. So , with that happenstance, we hurry to the podium with Myles name. Odds on that? I don't know but bet it is as high as 50/50.
So that would make a major league difference in what we do, but I agree, it is best here to trade down if Myles is gone, and i love the Jet trade, getting us an IMPACT player at #6, and a starter at #34, and very likely a starter at #40. I love that trade. Still if Cleve messes the bed, Myles would be one helluva consolation prize.
Other notes (not necessary to restate a pretty darn good lineup already)....Bouye...if we could pull that off, oh boy. Same with Taco. Boy, oh boy.. Really like Brandon Willis LDT and Joe Hayley at C.
One flyer for me is Hoyer at $10.5 mil . I know it is not popular, but if Kyle and Lynch hone in on Peterman, and then Kyle sees a guy in the #75-#125 group that he thinks would be a natural for his O, i think it possible that he goes two rooks , no bridge Qb. This would be 100% based on if Kyle really liked a late 3rd, early 4th rd pick that both he and lynch think can run his O. Downside is we would have NO vet, upside is we would save about $10 mil/yr. It isn't the money thing tho, it is getting QBs that kyle knows he can teach. This also assumes he nor lynch are not that sold on Trubisk. And there is NO WAY they would take Kizer. Watson, i guess so, but just don't see them doing that. If it were anybody else but Kyle at OC/HC, no , i wouldn't do this. But with kyle...if he went two Rooks, no vet....i would be fine with that. He knows what and who he can coach up. Advantage is we then have two guys learning from the ground up. With a great head coach, who can really coach up QBs, fine by me.
At WR, definitely want to re-sign Kerley at slot, as well as streator. Somewhere in here we are going to land a WR and Britt and or Gabriel are good bets.
Finally, i love a replacement for Bruce miller, and DiMacro would be a real good get.
Re-signs, forgot. Tiller, the guy who Trenton plays best beside him. Gotta get him back. Some guys not hot on him but beside Trenton, they both play better 1+1=3 with those two.
Re: signing a Cousins or Hoyer...frankly i would much rather have our second pick as it almost surely will be a starter.
Dang, March 9th. Talk about it being on top of us....
Really nice job , NC and AB. Good work.
