Mac Jones, after going 5-3 last year, was attractive to teams because he looked like he could execute an offense if he had a good surrounding cast. The thinking is that a strong team that just needed a QB could do well with him... in the same way that Sam Darnold was a reclamation project with us, and flourished with the Vikings and the Seahawks.

If a team traded for him in the offseason, they would've given Mac Jones a year to see if a decent QB can get them into the playoffs + audition for the long-term starting job.
I imagine a 3rd would've been decent compensation, but because we're a contending team... we'd rather have a quality backup than a 3rd round pick, so we set the asking price to a first rounder.

No, it's because Brissett is a 85 career passing QB like Mac Jones and will get traded for significant less compensation than we are asking.

If the league was high on Mac Jones to the point of him getting a Malik like contract he'd be gone for a 2nd or even a 3rd by now.

I'm guessing Brissett is going to be traded for a 6th/7th.

I think Jones is worth a 3rd. I think he slots in similarly to Darnold: a player who can win on a strong team and offensive coordinator, but not someone you build the franchise around.

But we wouldn't trade Jones for a 2nd/3rd, because we need him as insurance against a Purdy injury.
The only way Jones gets traded is if someone offered a 1st, and I think most of us would agree he's not worth a 1st.

Just because we're not letting Mac go for peanuts, doesn't make him any less valuable than other back up QBs/FAs that are being moved around or signed

can Sask49erFan share the source to his claim that BAL contacted the Niners about Mac?

I think it's a fair bet that all the QB-needy teams reached out to the 49ers and had the same result: far off on the compensation.

We don't want to give up our insurance policy at QB unless it's a really big offer.

Could definitely be true, especially for a team looking for a short term fix.

No doubt, lol.

Legit the only source I could find with a brief search… and we know how good people are at vetting info.

This is why I'm so sick of these accounts who claim to have sources but have less than 1K followers, hell a lot have less than 500.

I just tend to check everything unless it's a well established reporter who also functions outside of social media. Def giving zero credence to content creators, aggregators, and the like…

As fans, we really just need to consider what makes sense.

Makes total sense for any QB needy teams to at least inquire about Mac Jones. These are professional teams. Everyone's going to ask.
But who knows on what happens from there. We have no idea what those conversations look like if a team calls JL. Does he just tell them straight-up, "Mac Jones is too valuable to us. We're only entertaining a first", and the conversations end there?

but spinning it to be this matter of fact tho....

The Ravens are trading for Jacoby Brissett after not giving Lynch what he wants for Mac Jones

is basically saying BAL was forced to fall back on choosing Brissett. just another baseless claim by Sask.

Yeah, that might be a bit much.

Could be a lot of other ways to look at it too:
Jacoby Brissett is a big QB and has some utility in short yardage run game, and may fit their offense better than Mac Jones.
I assume the Ravens have some keeper and read option plays, given that Lamar Jackson is their QB.
