Also, for every Phillips rusty toy trade, I can point to a shiny Von Miller one by the Rams (or indeed CMC by us). Nobody says that a big trade is guaranteed to result in a championship. It's tough, and the other teams also have a say. They want to win too. But it gives a bigger chance of succeeding. Nickel and diming over "draft capital", and "building through the draft", and "developing young talent" gives a much smaller one, if at all.
The team has to try to reinforce success. Not deal for the hell of it, nor trade for a player it doesn't need. But husbanding draft resources and worrying about "overpaying" should be #123 in the list of its priorities. It should try to swing for the fences if the right pitch seems to be thrown its way.
Having draft capital, building through the draft, and developing young talent is actually exactly how most SM trams are built. We are a serious contender this year it appears, so we might be one or two players away. But there are no guarantees that those moves will get us over the top. But they will make keeping us competitive in future years more difficult. I'm all for making the right trade, but not in favor or giving away high picks, just to risky imho.
I'm usually all about building through the draft and developing young talent; but I feel like we are in a spot where we need to make a couple moves to get us over the hump for #6! We have a solid young core and many of the draft picks this year are crushing it, but there are a group of guys I really want to see get a ring before they retire in the next few years, ie Kittle, TW, Juice, etc. I thought we would have an uphill battle after we didn't do it in 23, because our division is so tough, but we have a great jump on everybody and Brock is playing on another level; I think they should really try to get some more d-line depth, WR, and a punt/kick returner!
