This is why I DGAF about 1st round picks anymore. That track record is horrendous, done making excuses for it. He needs to change the way he drafts, for instance take a shot at a Guard or a Safety in the 1st round, shoot trade up for one Caleb Downs was right frickin there!!! From #27 to #11 was doable!!! And jumping over Chicago for Dillon Thieneman would've been sick too.
Just trade the 1st round picks already and be done with it. Cap space and Draft picks are for the rebuilders!!!
Agree on first round picks. I like how ShanaLynch traded down their first round pick in 2026. I hope they do more of that. It goes to their strengths of finding multiple blue chippers in the later rounds - Warner, Kittle, Purdy, Jennings, McKivitz vs only Bosa.
I'd rather they trade down vs throwing away their first round picks (example: Trey Lance trade).
I think if we really want to dig this regime for their first round picks we have to look at the whole picture.
When in their jobs did they make each pick(we all make mistakes, it's how you learn from them...or whether you do)
How was the draft class in question? We know not all draft classes are the same.
When were they picking? Top 10 picks tend to be safer bets than bottom 10 in the first.
As I've said I believe we'd be a better team if Kyle gives up his power to a more seasoned GM(Lynch has been around for a while but it's hard to say what his value as a talent evaluator actually is when Kyle clearly calls the shots unless they hand it over to Saleh)
Thing is like you said...you have those picks and you can do a lot of different things with them. Stribling still has to show up in games that matter so I'm not ready to celebrate him yet but IF he's the guy most expect now then 49ers are buying themselves some leeway.
As much crap as Pearsall gets...he's shown he can play and play at a high level. Even bringing up injuries into it you can't fault the team for drafting him when he missed 0 starts in college.
I'd say they've shown that they're trying to learn from their mistakes and trying to avoid guys with off the field issues like Foster, stay away from tweeners early like Thomas and avoiding injury concern guys like Kinlaw.
We've just been incredibly snake bit with the recent crop of first round guys. Even Lance had the ankle break so we never got to see what he could be here. I certainly have no worries about that with Brock here but Pearsall and Mykel were guys who weren't injury concerns in the draft and simply got bad luck injuries before they could show they're good draft picks. Pearsall's time unfortunately is running short but Mykel at 22 and going into year 2 still has plenty of time to make his selection be a good one.
Personally, I think the ShanaLynch duo has been pretty decent in acquiring players. Just think about it. Two Superbowl appearances since 2017. Almost like every 3 years they appear in the championship game, almost. 2017 to 2019 is about 3 years, 2020 to 2023 is about 3 years, and then we're going on the 3rd rebuilding/reloading phase and hopefully a Superbowl appearance either this year or next. Hope hope! So I don't see Lynch having to be replaced at all. Having said that, that doesn't stop him from leaving the 49ers if they can't extend his contract, or he just is tired of it and just leaves. I look at the GM squad both Brian Hampton and RJ Gillen look like strong candidates to replace Lynch. Add in Kwesi and Frank Gore and that's a potentially a strong GM bench.
Like you said Kyle has a lot of power, but I think since Adam Peters left, he's relinquished a lot of power to the rest of the team and the front office. One reason I think is that Kyle's had a lot of misfires - Trey Lance, Dante Pettis, Reuben Foster, Joe Williams etc... The other is that Kyle has said they do a self scout and see what has worked and what hasn't. Obviously they have had more success in the later rounds (Purdy, Jennings, Colton McKivitz, etc...) than the earlier rounds, so I think they have (to a certain extent) implemented whatever worked to get the late round gems to the earlier rounds, since Adam Peters left. I believe what ShanaLynch - since Adam Peters left - is a more collaborative scouting kind of process. The Redskins under Joe Gibbs did a very similar kind of draft process - i.e. *
everybody in the front office and the coaching staff* gets involved.
2022 to 2023 drafts was one of the two weakest 49er drafts, but that's because of the Trey and CMC trades. We used a lot of draft capital to get those players. However, from a talent acquisition standpoint, trading for CMC and drafting Brock was - to me - eventually one of the stronger offseasons we had in getting talent. Free agency - in 2023 we got Jake Tonges, Sam Okuayinonu, Sam Darnold, Jon Feliciano. 2024 we got Drake Nugent, Evan Anderson. 2025 we got Mac Jones, Demarcus Robinson, Bryce Huff. Both Jake and Mac are starters and I consider them first round talent - if we had to pick them in the 2023 and 2025 draft.
