I'm sure Lynch is on the phone every day with GMs from around the league. Most trades don't happen with one phine call. There are usually a lot of feelers put out before anything happens. Just because Lynch hasn't pulled the trigger on a blockbuster trade doesn't mean he hasn't been working on one. My guess is far more deals fall through than we ever hear about.
This is what bugs me about the 2021 Stafford trade. I would think quite literally no trade ever should ever happen without all 32 GMs knowing about it first, let alone under anyone's nose, since it would be objectively terrible business otherwise (and unprofessional) to not at least hear the best possible offer from every possible candidate.
Yet Kyle made it sound like the Lions promised him and Lynch they would talk more the following Monday, and then bam Stafford gets traded Saturday night. I wish there was more of a media push to figure out what happened. Was Kyle lying, or was he lied to? Or did the Rams say "okay we will give you TWO 1sts with Goff but you have to accept the deal NOW…"?
We don't know what the Rams said. All we know is what was revealed through interviews and articles.
49ers and Kyle were trying to trade for Stafford. They were basically told nothing is happening anytime soon. Kyle goes on with his vacation. He gets called by a source telling him the Lions are going to move him now regardless of what he's heard so he needs to get a hold of them if they want Stafford. They never heard from the Lions who went ahead and made the deal they made.
In some way it could've been similar to what just happened with the Garrett trade. Lions new GM loved Goff after being in the Rams building when he was drafted. That was clearly a piece they felt very strongly about receiving along with the draft picks. Who were the 49ers going to offer? Jimmy G after we were giving up on him as well? I imagine if we made the move for the 3rd overall pick we were offering up a substantial haul of draft picks(just like we did when trying to get Aaron Rodgers)
It takes two teams to get a deal done. Clearly Lions GM knew what he wanted. He could've easily gotten more by playing the 49ers and the Rams against each other. That wasn't what happened. Yet people still pretend Shanahan just brushed it off and ignored the Lions and blew the trade somehow.
I'm sorry but for the first time I'm going to say this to you: your comment does not make sense.
First of all, the Stafford trade was agreed on in January before the Bucs/Chiefs Super Bowl was even played. We traded for #3 overall in March. So no, we could not have traded #3 overall for Stafford.
Second of all, are you seriously trying to argue Goff was seen as a much more valuable asset than Jimmy G? I would say at the time it was about lateral. Jimmy G was on a much more reasonable contract and had accomplished about as much. Also there were absolutely stories that McVay was in a "failed marriage" with Goff just days before the trade went down after their playoff loss to the Packers. So their leverage was even weaker than ours when accounting for QB relationship.
Third of all, Kyle made it sound like the trade simply happened right under his nose and that he never even got a chance to give a counter offer. This "a source at least told him before the trade was finalized" take is news to me and a source would be nice but I don't think that's what happened.
Fourth of all, #12 overall + Jimmy G is what we could have offered and that is objectively a better package than what the Lions got at least at the time. Goff's contract was considered onerous and the two 1sts were in the future before position was guaranteed at all. It would've been seen as a lot but I think we can all agree it would've worked out better for us than the Trey Lance trade.
