I think what bugs me most about their approach to the draft is that they just don't solve stuff. They went into the draft with major needs at edge, safety, offensive guard and tight end and they leave the draft with all of those same needs.
Height is a nice pickup but if you want to see a team knocking out their issue at edge, look at Dallas as an example. I want them to commit to addressing specific things or simply going best player available. Instead they reach for weird needs and often miss because they are reaching and simply trying to outsmart everyone else while a team like Baltimore makes the smart, conventional picks year in and year out and year in and year out they manage to acquire a bunch of productive players.

I agree. In fairness to them... and I hate to say this, but now looking at it, all of the decent X receiver prospects were gone by round 4. And all except 2 were gone before our first pick in the 4th (Sarratt and Lance).
That said, we still could've fully addressed IOL, DE, and WR if we had played our cards better (a bit of hindsight sure).
Imagine this:
33. Chase Bisontis, OG
70. Romello Height, DE
90. Chris Bell, WR or Jaishawn Barham, DE/LB
107. Elijah Sarratt, WR or Dani Dennis Sutton, DE
127. Connor Lew, C
139. Kamari Ramsey, S or Zakee Wheatley, S
154. Jaden Dugger, LB/DE
179. Jordan Van Den Berg, DT

Nice. But wait...you forgot the mid round unnecessary RB pick. Your confusing me.

The 49ers are a dude who only dates one type of woman, they are a top tier dude who isn't interested in the blonde bombshell. He's more interested in her background and weather she'll be a good mother. She may not look like much but she's got the qualities he's looking for.

Thought this was interesting…Tariq Ahmad, RJ Gillen, and Josh Williams explaining SF's draft process.

I watched that earlier. I'm not sure how to feel about what I heard. Dude brought up Dre Greenlaw and George Kittle as proof of their process...my guy, that was seven years ago. You have no new Kittles or Greenlaws to show for the last four drafts.
I feel like these draft issues might be a systemic problem...

They really didn't say much that we all don't already know. One thing that stood out to me is that they self scout two years back and look two years back as to what went right and what went wrong.
So I'm sure they will be reviewing this two years from now.

I only liked the Oklahoma d-lineman.
It looks like the last draft of Lynch.

people b***hed the last two years too. Pearsall, green, puni, mustapha, williams, collins, stout. How many of those guys were called reaches on draft day? Maybe All of them other than alfred williams and puni? All starters on a good team last year.

You guys know I don't tend to be a debbie downer when it comes to the squad and I certainly hope all these guys are brilliant picks who help us win lots of games and SBS for years to come BUT
What drives me crazy is this team's track record for major reaches. Greenlaw and Kittle weren't examples of that for several reasons.
I don't think mid-late day 3 picks are "reach" in general once you get out of the middle of the 4th round it tends to be "pick you poison" and people don't tend to react the same way as they do to reaches in the first few rounds. Greenlaw was rated as a mid-late draft pick. Going at pick 148 isn't exactly premium draft capital. Kittle at 146 many actually thought was a steal. They simply don't meet the "reach" status that I think most of us are upset about.
However if you look at all the reaches we've made if we're looking at round and a half + type of above consensus in rounds 1-4 the sample size is piss poor.
Off the top of my head we're looking at Trey Sermon, TDP, Cameron Latu - clear cut guys who were drafted way ahead of consensus and the results are final and it's epic failure across the board. Two 3rd round running backs who COMBINED couldn't crack 300 yards total offense and a TE who did absolutely nothing and couldn't even make the team in year 2 after getting a phantom IR so he wouldn't have to be cut as a rookie.
That's not even counting Jake Moody. And right now the only guy trending in the right direction is Stout. Nick Martin...not starting out great.
So until the team makes those major reaches early and hits on them...it's hard to trust their process. I'm always optimistic and hoping the class works out well but those comparisons are not legit.

No. The team has been to the Super Bowl twice in their tenure and might have gone to a third if Brock hadn't gotten hurt, and they have been in the playoff mix in just about every year the team wasn't decimated by injuries. Last year they got to within a win of the number one seed and homefield advantage with a team that was missing some of its best players for a majority of the year. A lot of franchises would kill for that kind of success. It sucks that they couldn't bring home a trophy and there are legitimate questions that can be asked about how they approach the draft but the sporting thing to do is to wait and see how this particular class pans put before passing judgement.
I mean, how much do you even know about the guys they selected other than maybe they weren't names that you recognized or because some guy on TV said the pick was a 'bad value". Did you actively follow any of their careers in college or do anything more than look at a 3-minute highlight reel? I suspect that it is a common problem of the internet era, and maybe sports fans in particular, everyone thinks they're an expert. I prefer to let the players decide what kind of career they're going to have once they get on the field. Go Niners!
