Dude had a spinal fusion how in the hell is he playing football?

Still SMH that people think this is an issue. Doctors cleared him for a reason. Only downside to fusion is possible loss of mobility, depending on where it happened. Had he not done it, we'd see him missing games regularly to spasms due to herniation. Fusion strengthens the vertebrae to prevent that. SIGN HEEEM NOW PLEASE!

Fusion 'fuses' two levels together. If you think that strengthens it, I'm not sure. I read he did C5 and C6 which is higher on the spine below the throat area. The person loses the ability to flex between those 2 vertebrae. I heard he kept getting stingers from tackling and it caused the herniation which probably led to the neuropathy on his hands.
We've had linemen that have had fusion done, I think Joe Montana had fusion done as well. After reading about it I don't think he's at any more risk of paralysis than any other player making tackles.

So you've "heard" have you? I've had a spinal fusion surgery, so kinda have first hand experience. I had it 10 years ago and haven't had any back issues since. Again, doctors wouldn't clear him to play if there was any risk. But if the internet tells you something, guess it must be true.

One of my best friends had a spinal fusion and can hardly walk now…Not every fusion works out great and leads to a guy being able to play NFL football. Sounds like Samuel had a great recovery if he's able to still play.

We will see I'm glad your fusion worked out, constant back pain is awful.

I've had back issues for over 60 years. They're now so bad I have trouble walking very far. I considered surgery but the results are too uncertain. I've talked to many people that had surgery and some were better, some were about the same and several were worse than they were before. Back surgery is one of the riskiest surgeries there is as far as results go. I've tried prednisone shots but they only work for about a month. Plus they mess with your liver.

Damn CatchMaster sorry to read about that. I hope you find something that works for you.

Hello there Mr Catch,

you know one my great uncle in the Philippines had a back problem and this wooden bed without any cushion helped him out.. the pain disappeared amazingly though he never felt 100% but I think that's also because of his age then.. it's mainly made out of bamboo or solid wood.. maybe you oughta try getting one build here ...

Have you been following my post in this thread or only this one?

Like I said.. making an asinine trade is worse than making none at all.

Things have changed a lot in 10 years. I have a L5 -S1 issue that I had a microdisectomy& lamonectomy a few years ago and I'm not 100% but at least I can walk now. lol. My next step is fusion and I know you can fuse with bones, rods(titanium ceramic), or just have a cage slipped in. I also read they have started actual disc replacement in the right candidates.
Where the disc problem occurs has a lot to do with options. JJ Watt had 2 procedures (micro& lamonectomy) but eventually had to retire. We had Fuller back in the 90s that had an upper injury and never played again, but that was 30+ years ago.

I'm glad to read you're fully recovered and I agree his doctors need to clear him as well as the team doctors.

The only thing that will is death. Not in any hurry for that but unfortunately I have 4 different issues so even if I elected to have surgery it would still leave the other problems. Oh well. I've learned to live with it. I see young people in wheel chairs and I think to myself that I have no problems compared to them.

Yeah I'm sorry to hear that. My buddy had a fusion in his late 30s and went from a top tier athlete his whole life to having limited mobility a gaining a bunch of weight in the process.

I've watched my father go from a normal guy in his late 60s who plays with his grandkids and was still active in sports, to needing a cane to walk in a matter of 2 yrs. He got a back surgery (not a fusion) and has tried everything including the prednisone shots. Every doctor says it's something different…I don't wish back pain on anyone.

Well one my old bosses went to school and is still friends with a guy who had spinal fusion in his neck and he is in the hall of fame. Yeah my old boss went to Tennessee. Not gonna name any names but the guy was a pretty big deal in Denver for like 3-4 years.

I hope one day we sign a player that has hemorrhoid issues so I can talk about mine here
I get not wanting to get fleeced in trade but it would be great if they would stop doing that to themselves in the draft.

I have no problem with not getting fleeced on a trade deal, but when it comes time to draft that round one pick they better dam well do their homework and get a contributor.

I was L5 S1 also. Kept re-herniating off even the smallest things like sneezing. Down that far though, I didn't lose any mobility. Actually slowed my golf swing a bit and helped there. But so happy to not have to worry about any further microdiscecromies.
