We've officially entered the phase of our version of "Stars and Scrubs", I prefer "Starts and Youth" we will likely look to have 7-10 guys on top of the market deals and everyone else on rookie deals.
Draft picks will have to excel to get 2nd contracts with us, and then the team will bump one of the top guys off replacing their salary with the rookie contract graduate.
I think the model can work, Ravens and Eagles seem like the gold standard for this system. Paraag will need to ensure we plot out which guys will be bumped to keep the dead money down, and Lynch will have to keep hitting draft picks as I'd expect more churn and comp picks when we let guys walk.
Bills and Chiefs have a model built around having cheap weapons and relying on their All world QB's to cover those deficiencies, I don't think that's an option for us.
Stability with our HC and GM and the synergy they seem to have with roster building are going to be the key, even more so than playing talent of our "Stars".
Drafting well is always critical for team success. I'd like them to collect as many picks as possible every year, and rather than bumping off veterans trade them away even when the pick that comes back is lower than they seem worth.
Drafting well is really means getting lucky. Every pick is usually a good pick at the time or they would make it. Whether the pick pans out is a differnet story. The other issue is draft position and what teams need that are drafting ahead of you. This is a big factor for O line and of course QB. The top ones are usually few and far between so they go early. If you draft later than #20 the chances for success start dropping.
That's why you want more picks. if you can take a few players at positions that need help every year eventually you'll hit on one :)
Of course it is, but it's definitely amplified when you've paid a QB. Having a hit at QB on a rookie deal allows you to swing for the fences with trades and Free Agency spending, it's not sustainable but can be very effective in the short term. We're no longer that type of team. It's just a shame we couldn't quite cap it off with a ring.
I don't think you can fault the execution much, we just didn't get the ultimate prize, and it was so close.
