Another veteran on the block: Niners receiver Pierre Garcon. He's banged up right now (shoulder, knee) and 32 years old, but he could certainly still serve a contender in a complementary role down the stretch. Safety Jimmie Ward (playing on an $8.5 million fifth-year option) is another one who's been involved in trade discussion, but my sense is the Niners would need to get something significant to deal him.

Hmmm, so when we're interested in an acquisition, we're aggressively prudent.

But when we're in the trade market and trading our own trash, we're aggressively incomprehensible.

I'm always skeptical when "name players" become available. Are they not producing like they were supposed to or I they unhappy. Maybe they are disrupting the locker room or always getting minor injuries that cause them to miss playing time. Maybe they are just surplus. If we were trying to get rid of Thomas or AA wouldn't you really wonder why we want to trade a former first rounder. Sometimes a change of scenery works out and the players blossom with their new team but caution is always needed.

Who would take him? And for what? It makes total sense for us, relieves us of some salary cap and gets young receivers on the field, possibly gets us some draft capital to play with. But how would a high salary cap, banged up 32 year old receiver benefit anyone else?

Garcon makes sense, sherm and Staley do not. They've already said sherm isn't going anywhere and Staley more than likely finishes his career here once his contract is done.
