I don't know how true this is or what to make of it, but I read this on NinersNation.

McVay did not turn the job down. 49ers just weren't quite ready to make a offer and the Rams jumped in.

From what I've been reading about McVay we missed out on the best coach available.

Don't care if he did. He's not the first to do it. ESPN 980 should track down audio of worst thing each NFL HC has said to an official and tweet it. Until then, its bogus to single out Shanahan like he's the only one guilty of this.
