Many of the so-called NFL experts out there are saying that the Niners' problems stem largely from a lack of talent. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with that but when I watch this team, it often looks simply unprepared, physically and mentally. There are missed tackles, blown assignments, and flatly inexcusable errors. Does this speak to a lack of talent or a lack of good coaching and player development? Or both? A guy like Buckner for example, was a very highly rated player coming out of college and should be playing better than he is. The same could be said for Garnett. I raise these questions because after such a horrid season, this is the time to question whether Chip and company can take this team upward. Now, to be fair, but when a team loses its starting NT and both starting ILBs, it is going to have issues stopping the run. It doesn't matter what team we are discussing. So...injuries have been a factor in the team's dismal performance. This dismal though? I think not. What do you think?

Excellent post, Camper... I don't think this team is completely devoid of talent like some would have us believe. One of the reasons that Harbaugh was so effective was because he put together a first class coaching staff, which of course, left when he was let go. Not smart.

Chip does seem to be a system coach, meaning that he can't necessarily get the most talent out of a roster because the players have to fit his system. To me, a great coach is one who recognizes the talent he has, develops it, and builds around the strength of the team, creating a system in the process. In other words, he puts as many players as possible in position to be successful. In Chip's case, it appears the players have to adjust to his system for it to work, not the other way around.

All of this being said, Jed hired Chip. That is the real problem, an owner who doesn't know football trying to make football decisions. Eddie D had the same problem until he hired Walsh and got the hell out of the way...

Great posts you two. We have several quality starters and key role players but need impact players at the key spots to take the units to the next level. And like you said, Kelly has to defer more to Modkins and implement more power to fit our players. Kelly seems like a quality passing game coordinator but to succeed in the NFL you need balance. Implement more power, two back sets and balance in pace. On defense, we need to go all in on a proven veteran DC like Todd Bowles or someone else. Period. And finally, we have to get and STAY healthy. I can't remember the last time we started the same 22 two weeks in a row...1989? This young team just needs to be on the field and playing...snap counts are the only way players truly develop. After last year and this, many of these young players should be in prime position to start playing more consistently next year.

QB: IMPACT PLAYER NEEDED - nice backups in either Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder or Thad Lewis
RB1 & 2: IMPACT PLAYER NEEDED - nice 1-2 punch with Carlos Hyde & DuJuan Harris but need that back who can stay healthy and thrive in zone and power; hard to say what we have or don't have in Mike Davis
M/TE: Vance McDonald & Garrett Celek - we could probably hold off here but we should consider a more natural pass catching TE but McDonald does have big play making abilities when/if used and he appears to be getting better/more consistent. I have a good feeling about Je'Ron Hamm as depth
X WR (LEFT): IMPACT PLAYER NEEDED - this is the impact player we need to make the rest of the unit much better. This player would instantly make Kerley and Torrey more effective and allow Quinton Patton to be the #4. We have no idea what we have in Rod Streater & Eric Rogers or even DeAndre Smelter but one may end up being quality depth (or more; we hope)
Y WR (SLOT): Jeremy Kerley & Aaron Burbridge (Bruce Ellington) - we're in great shape here
Z WR (RIGHT): Torrey Smith & Chris Harper - we're in good shape here but could use another 'smooth' deep threat to push Torrey and develop for depth
OL: Joe Staley, Zane Beadles, Daniel Kilgore, Joshua Garnett,Trenton Brown & Andrew Tiller plus John Theus & Marcus Martin. What a difference a year makes, eh? Now is there anybody in FA who can elevate this unit even more? No doubt we need a T of the future and depth at C but those are best found in FA; we could go another Garnett-route (high talent) and develop one over the next couple of years
DL: IMPACT PLAYER NEEDED - DeForest Bucker, Glenn Dorsey/Ian Williams & Arik Armstead plus Chris Jones, Mike Purcell, Ronald Blair & Tony Jerod Eddie. Can anyone really count on Williams/Dorsey? We saw the effect of having a quality start with Dorsey at NT last week; suddenly everyone around him looked much better. Given our rash of injuries, it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring in another DE as well as a young impact NT
SAM/WILL: IMPACT PLAYER NEEDED - Ahmad Brooks, Aaron Lynch, Tank Carradine & Eli Harold. No doubt we need an impact player here. The ripple effect would make all the difference for the defense. You get a true edge rusher and suddenly, your entire defense is more effective. Lynch/Brooks are legit SAM's with depth and Harold may be decent depth as well but we need that dominant WILL that teams have to game plan around. No easy task to find
MIKE/TED: IMPACT PLAYER NEEDED - Navarro Bowman, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Gerald Hodges, Michael Wilhoite, Nick Bellore & Shayne Skov - No doubt we need an impact player here too. The ripple effect would make all the difference and instantly upgrade the unit and it's depth (and our peace of mind). We might have quality depth with Ray-Ray & Hodges
CB: Jimmie Ward & Rashard Robinson, Keith Reaser,Dontae Johnson, Tramaine Brock, JaCorey Shepherd, Chris Davis & Will Redmond. We're probably in great shape here once we get some health. We have 4 players who can play the slot and that's rare. Peppers could end up being an option which would allow Ward to move to his natural FS spot next to Reid/Tartt
FS: Eric Reid & Jaquiski Tartt, Marcus Cromartie & Antoine Bethea. We could use some depth here as well as this too is a unit plagued with injuries
