wow
Steve young said it best...Chips system requires elite players to function. He clarified saying Chips system more than other NFL caliber systems is going to require the best of the best to find success in the NFL.
I agree, it totally makes sense.
2012 worked not just because the offense was new to the league but because we had tons of mismatches everywhere.
We had:
- Two great TEs that had speed and run blocking capability (best in NFL for those aspects while Gronk & Murdered were for catching the ball)
- Randy Moss and Mario Manningham adding speed on the outside
- OL that was #1 rated at run blocking
- Gore and Miller
- Crabtree
No other team had these weapons, not even Seattle. Maybe you could say that the Redskins did. They might have had a stronger running game, but that's it. It was just too hard to stifle this many guys in the passing game, that a CK that could let loose and just fire throws all day long would be very successful.
If Kelly came to us in 2013, and we kept Delanie& Moss, then his offense could have definitely flourished here to the extent that such an offense can work in the NFL. The way Seattle has kept the zone read in there to the highest percentage since 2013 indicates the Kelly system has potential.
So the 49ers ONCE had such talent to run Kelly's offense, now no longer. You bring back all of those guys (or guys like that) and I promise you that Kap would flourish -- he's still a very good system QB.
Another thing that goes unsaid is running 99% of your plays from the shotgun is similar to calling passes as 75-80% of your offense -- very hard to sustain, limits you in certain ways.
Forget the ultra fast pace.......that's irrelevant. I like Kelly concepts, but the complete lack of under center bothers me. Kap has played well under center, or at least better when he has that balance. Almost all QBs do.
Pretty interesting that the greatest 49er offenses revolved around Montana and Young 100% under center. Kind of annoying that so many offenses revolve primarily around shotgun.
I wonder if Peyton Manning in his prime or Brady, two statues, could run Kelly's offense with similar talent levels as they've had in their career? Run it with championship results of course.
I think in the future, the most dangerous offense will be more traditional with a QB who could sprinkle in zone read, pistol concepts from time to time.
In the NFL right now, I think Dallas has potential to be most difficult to stop offense. We saw them go into Seattle and beat them two years ago.....if Prescott can approximate 80% of Romo's passing ability with his mobility, they might be even more dangerous.
