What stat line would Kaepernick need to have Friday to be named QB1?

12 completions out of 9 attempts is reasonable.

If he's able to score 1 TD via flying that should seal the deal.

In all seriousness, I think it's going to come down to seeing how this Chip Kelly system operates with Kaep at the helm. I dont think a stat line will be the end all for him.

I get that Gabbert /Driskell / Ponder are all similar in speed compared to Kaep, but they all lack the athleticism he brings to a scheme like Chips. I'm looking forward to seeing the opportunities he's going to create for Hyde or even himself, and to me that 's all he really has to showcase to win the starting job.

In all honesty, I'm not looking for a stat line.

I'm looking for competence.

He will likely ALWAYS have a low completion % but in his first few years (2012 in particular) he could compensate for that with explosive plays. He was always going for the deeper route even if he couldn't always complete it. He completed only 62% of his passes but even at that low % he averaged 8.3 yards per ATTEMPT. He was the most accurate passer in the NFL that year on passes over 20 yards downfield.

They accomplished a lot of that with a strong run game that drew defenders into the box, ran an offense that forced defenses to show their hand pre snap, ran a TON of play action and zone- read which also clarified looks and gave him less defenders to read, and ran a fairly simplistic passing system.

The league caught up to not only Kap, but the system itself. Roman kept trying to change his offense but in doing so kept taking him further and further away from Kaps strengths. They used less and less play action, scrapped the zone-read almost altogether, and forced him to sit in the pocket.

Meanwhile in Seattle, Russell Wilson never stopped using the zone-read and ran more play action than any team in the league. Why? It works.

Now I'm not saying that Kap is Wilson. I'm not saying that at all. What I AM saying though is that Chip Kellys offense has a strong run game that draws defenders into the box, forces defenses to show their hand, runs a TON of play action and zone-read which also clarifies looks and gives the QB less defender to read, and its a fairly simplistic passing system.

I dunno if Kap will succeed under Chip, but what I do know is that Kaps last, best chance for success might be in this offense. People tend to forget how accurate Kap was early on those deeper routes. I'm hoping he gets a solid shot to see what he can do.

Long story short, if he goes 10-20 I won't be looking at the comp%. I'll be looking at whether the offense is moving.

He needs to demonstrate he won't stare down a covered receiver and take a sack instead of quickly getting to the next read. Period.

Maybe throw the ball away instead of running out of bounds for a -7 yard sack?

Maybe throw the ball away instead of forcing a pass into triple coverage?

Maybe take 50 mph off the throw when your receiver is 5 yards away?

Maybe read the defense and recognize what they are going to do before the play?

Maybe see the other side of the field?

I don't think this game will decide the starter. However Kap definitely needs a good game not only for the coaches but for his teammates.

If he struggles i don't see how he can be handed the job at this point. I think the stats may not as much as how he opperates the offense and how his reads look.

If he's making Kap wow plays but it's because he missed wide open looks and improvised and made something out of a broken play that won't look as good to coaches as if he executes the offense the way they want whether that leads to big stats or not.

So he could go 10 for 12 120 yards 2 TD 0 INT because he has two big plays after scrambling around and his guys got wide open for long TDs but he sensed pressure when it wasn't there and missed his read won't be as good to the coaches if he goes 5 for 10 60 yards and the only rushing TD is from a RB but he's making the right reads each time and not abandoning plays early and the incompletions are due to drops or just the play dictating a throw away as the best option.

I've be preaching this as well! Everyone is trying to compare what Kap did in 2014-2015 to what he's gonna do in Chip's offense but like you said it wasn't the same...I saw a lot of 3 WR sets that had him sitting in the pocket trying to go through reads (which we all know isn't his strong suit) and he struggled (OL play didn't help). This offense is gonna play to a lot of his strengths and I for one am excited to see what he can do.

I just want to see him hit the correct target on time. Simply show that he knows how to apply the offense.
