What stat line would Kaepernick need to have Friday to be named QB1?

All he has to do today is look like an NFL QB lol. If he looks even meh, he gets another chance next Sunday. If he looks stellar, or the opposite, it might be decided today.

Presuming Gabbert looks ok or better of course.

There are only a few ways it goes. They both look great. Next Sunday decides. They both pool like crap. Next Sunday decides. They both look meh. Next Sunday decides. One plays excellent and the other doesn't? I bet next Sunday still plays out for the decision. I don't think Kelly plays Kap for one game only and makes a decision. And even if he does, he may not tell anyone until he has to, just for the heck of it, lol.

lol Won't even name until game day against the Rams
Oh yeah there's no way they publicly announce the starter for game one. Gotta keep em guessing.

I hope so... Ride the mystery as long as possible with every wrinkle and player. More complicated to try and prepare. I think CK and Gabbert both gonna look good tonight but they're different players so then it's gonna come down to what Chip likes better for the long run. Or he might go college style and say I'm gonna name QBs on a week to week basis, until someone cements their positioning.

Unleash him with no restrictions as long as he plays within the system.

Discussion over

What happened the next game? Lol. I was talking about sustained success, not the typical one and done from Alex

That's your knock on him? Dobibreally have to even mention the Seahawks game? The one we were winning until Kaep decided to give the game away

We were actually not winning when that happened. The defense already blew the lead.

My knock is that he's too safe. He's come out of his shell and caught a couple defenses off guard, but he was also getting alot of opportunities those games with his teams forcing 5 TOs. Alex has never thrived unless his defense is playing well. Notice the leads in both those playoff games evaporated when his team stopped forcing TOs for him. With Justin and Aldon injured, he would've had to deal with a bad defense I doubt we get by the Packers.

Alex has his once in a blue moon games, but he's never been able to sustain it for 3 games, or 2 for that matter, the way Kap was able to in those playoffs. Maybe he would've gave us 3 Saints games, but i highly doubt that and we would've been dead in the water with a low production QB and a bad defense

I hope for a good game by both if them, and the team as a whole. Gonna laugh hard though if Chip doesn't name a starter after today. I can just hear the comments now!

With quarterback Colin Kaepernick making his preseason debut against Green Bay, it will be interesting to see whether or not that affects the performance of the wide receivers. Against the Houston Texans, quarterback Blaine Gabbert completed 4 of 10 passes for 63 yards. He was 1 of 5 when targeting wide receivers. The only completion to a wide receiver was a screen pass to Bruce Ellington. In the Week 2 game against the Broncos, Gabbert finished 6 of 9 for 69 yards. Again, only one of those pass completions went to a wide receiver, and it was another screen pass: this time to DeAndrew White, Ellington's replacement in the slot. He finished 1 of 2 on passes targeting wide receivers.

So, in six series, over two preseason games, Gabbert has not completed a pass to a wide receiver that traveled beyond the line of scrimmage. Two completed screen passes are the extent of the involvement of the wide receivers in the offense over those two games. Are the wide receivers not getting separation and providing open targets? Is Gabbert's reputation for playing it safe and looking primarily for tight ends and running backs underneath causing him to miss open wide receivers? Those questions should be answered to some degree with the return of Kaepernick, who has always demonstrated a willingness to take shots down the field when they present themselves.

Prior to the Broncos game, Chip Kelly spoke candidly about this desire to see the young receivers demonstrate their ability on a more consistent basis. "What we do need to see is consistency. We haven't really seen a ton of that right now. We've seen them flash, which is awesome because you know what they can do, but it's being consistent not only on a daily basis but really, on a play-to-play basis, that you can count of them."

We all know that this is suppose to be an open competition and so far, it seems, that Chip Kelly is living up to that notion. However, I believe the only reason why (going into the dress rehersal) Gabbert hasn't been named starter, though, is because Blaine has not hit his WR's consistently and has only completeted 2 screen passes to them in the preseason so far.

What we need to see, from Kaep, in order to make this competition interesting, is for Kaep to methodically move the offense down the field and to get a mixture of guys involved in the passing game (RB's, TE's and WR's).

In order for Gabbert to solidify the starting job, he needs to show that he can consistently get the ball to his WR's. We already know that he can hit the TE's and RB's but completing 2 of 7 to his WR's is just not getting it done. Especially when those only 2 completions didn't even go beyond the LOS.

Good stuff. I knew Blaine was captain check down but didn't realize it was that bad.

It's that bad. I'm still dumbfounded how people think his play has been remotely good thus far. Overly safe football keeps you employed and gives you a high QB rating. It doesn't win you games.

Playing safe, turnover-free football in passing game and relying on defense and run game is how many teams win games, playoff games, and championships.

(not necessarily applying this to Gabbert, because he has a knack for dumb picks, but in general)

C,early he will not have a chance to do anything meaningful, he could trow for 400 agains the second team, and wouldn't matter, they're the second team. The completion is over, Chip just announced it, Gabbert is our starter!
His stat line would have to begin with "starter" he's riding the bench against the first stringers. Maybe if Gabbert looks atrocious kaep could get some earlier snaps but this looks like Gabbert is our starter for sure. And it's not a surprise, kaep doesn't want to be here and he's not wanted here. I just hope Denvers qbs look so horrible they reconsider a trade for Kaep again.
This isn't even a competition. This is more rigged than a Russian election. It doesn't matter at all what Kaep does. After this past offseason, after what Baalke and york did to him? After the unprofessional leaks, and amateurish way the Centennial Crew handled him?
