Blaine Gabbert started shaky in his Chip Kelly offensive debut but finished strong with a 44-yard TD strike to Vance McDonald. Offense put up 300 yards in the first half alone (140/pass-160/run) and held the $19M QB Brock Osweiller to just 27 passing. That ... is good. If not for two poorly timed fumbles, this game isn't even close.

Gabbert looked awful - finish strong LOL! all that yardage was put up by 2nd stringers against a D missing their best players. get your head out of the sand.

Chillax there Niner fan...just an exercise in how freaking stupid these things are.

Like the commentator on NFL Network said, "...and her's what I like about Blaine Gabbert. It didn't start out real good; couple of ugly throws, not accurate, really uncatchable for his for weapons and responded with a big run, able to move the ball down in Houston territory and then comes right back and he's able to diagnose the second-year LB McKinney falling down and puts a strike right on McDonald...I love the resiliency that he bounced back and made a couple of nice plays."

Sweet! If it holds true, we can rid ourselves of Baalke and draft a real QB with the #1 overall pick next year. To me, that is a much better scenario than another 6 win season and Baalke drafting another defender.

This team is thoroughly awful top to bottom. I thought as a couple weeks of TC and preseason got underway that I'd feel a bit more optimistic and it's actually done the complete opposite.

Gabbert seems to be getting worse or, at best, status quo.
Kaepernick has apparently been just as bad up until he killed his arm.
We have one bona fide NFL receiver and someone who would be a WR#4 or #5 on another team is going to take the #2 spot
We have no pass rush with Lynch out for the first four games
We have a deep secondary, but a largely unproven one with a guy like Jimmie Ward who's trying a new position and prone to getting beat

Sure, the running game could help a great deal and the o-line HAS to be better (and will be) but then we're right back to '06-'10 where teams will stack the box, take away the run, and force whichever horrible QB we trot out there to beat them...and they won't.

Now let's factor in the fact that Chip Kelly will run the offense into the ground (see aforementioned "dead" arm during training camp) with his high-tempo offense and we're staring down the barrel of 4-12 at best.

Can't believe that after a stomach turning 5-11 campaign that this is the "improved" product they're rolling out this year.

Next year, Baalke will be gone, they'll promote Gamble from within, they keep Chip around, draft a QB, then we wait another couple years and Kelly doesn't pan out, new head coach comes in, tries to resurrect a QB a previous regime drafted....rinse/repeat

Never fails that people forget how meaningless the preseason is every year

Just because the wins don't count doesn't make it meaningless.

The preseason is all about evaluating. Players make the team or don't based on preseason performance (as well as other factors obviously). And the same things coaches and GMs see in those games, media and fans can see too.

I think what analysts were looking to see is improvement over last year in the passing game, and what they saw instead was regression. 9ers were very arguably worse than their 5-11 record last year, and if they can't move the ball more effectively through the air this year they will probably be even worse than last year. I'm still hoping it comes together with either Gabbert or Kap, but people who are simply reporting what they are seeing are not impressed so far. That's your take away from this.

Would you be OK with a passing TD every 3 series? Atop of that are you aware it was the first pre-season game in an entierly new offense?

We're not going to know what we have in the passing game, no matter who the QB is, until about 3-4 games into the reg season.

After week 4 is when posts like yours make sense. The o-line needs to form and gel as a unit. The QB's need to get the new offense in their heads and get use to the fast pace. The WR's need to get the routes down, the RB's need to hold onto the ball and the defense needs to get use to yet another DC.

Pre-season is good for getting these things in order. New HC, new system, new DC, new players etc. All while shaking off rust.

I think we're going to be an improved team from last year. Until the regular season proves otherwise.

Not only that but our run game looked good outside of the fumbles. Which would be huge if it were a reg season game but it wasnt. Kinda glad they happened. It will put focus on ball protection moving forward.

Same with accuracy on shorter "gimmy" passes. If these sort of things continue over the next few games into the reg season then we have major cause for concern.

If we come out with a 4-7 TD to int ratio over the first four games then we have cause for concern. Whoever the starting QB is will prob be pulled at that point.

This years preseason is important. New HC, new DC, new players, new systems etc and we have a brutal early schedule.

I want too see rhythm in the passing game too. Want to see the run game continue on this pace without fumbles. We have a lot of football left before the season starts. Biggest concern for me is the QB/WR/ILB positions. On OLB Lynch being out the first four games does suck but Kelly's teams rely on scoring points. Something our first team did vs the Texans. And we have Buck this year with what sounds like an improved Armstead. There are things to look forward to.

If our first team can score vs Denver in 3 series I'm good with that. 2 TD's from the first team vs Green Bay by week 3 would be great. Moving the ball into the endzone is the entire point on offense. Thus far we have achieved that goal.
