I wish I could see this as a bright spot, but I just can't. We have become that team that players don't want to come to, unless they are overpaid to do so. The 49ers won't overpay. So the money goes unspent, and makes the York's pockets fatter. That is not going to be an incentive for them to change things, so we will continue to miss out on impact free agents next season. And the next. So basically, we are screwed until we can hit on a couple of really quality drafts, and completely turn the team around that way.

Yup. 2000s all over again.

How does this relate to the 2000's. If anything, they learned that blowing loads of cash on FA's and playing close to the cap doesnt work. Anytime I see somebody say that the money goes back into Jeds pocket shows how little football knowledge is behind the post.

See the bold.
we already hit on some, and now we just added more this year,

We are building a great foundation.

I don't usually agree with this guy, but I agree right now, Baalke has hit on many picks in the last few years, Armstead is good, Reid is good, Ward looks like a starter. Then late rounders like Johnson, Lynch could be an all pro. Then I love this years draft. We're fine for the future, we just need to develop these young kids.

I'm not sure how having so much cap space is a bright spot. it's nice if there were a FA worth signing but i don't think there's anyone out there that's worth it unless Aaron Rodgers were free or someone like an AJ Green. Even then, i'd hate to see us go out and over pay for someone that is a gamble and may not make an impact.

We aint winning a Super Bowl so maybe we can win Cap Space Bowl?

People need to understand something about free agency. Teams overpay, especially for the higher end talent. Supply and demand. It happens in real estate and happens in football. The higher end players will have many suitors. We're not going to get a "steal" or bargain.

This is why you need to absolutely hit on drafting and player development cuz you're gonna pay out the ass in free agency.

I think without question this is our biggest bright spot, 49.5 million in cap space... even more if we end up getting rid of kaep next year. That could fill some major holes in our team with top tier talent. I'm not looking for illegitimate championships, like the saints or broncos, we don't need to BUY our best player. I hope we use this money strictly for both o and d line with consistent, quality players. This season we will see how good our unproven talent is and make up for what is lacking in free agents. 2017 we should be back :-) please hold back your hate for me saying this season is doomed but it is. 7 wins at best. Hope I'm wrong but just don't like the schedule and our unproven young guys... yet.

I would think that you'd want Kaep to return to form instead of 'getting rid of'of him? If he does, along with the defense and cap space we're back in the hunt consistently for the next 4-5 years.

I'd love for kaep to return to form and be dominant like we all know... especially the Packers know he can be. But the only news I've heard this offseason is, he wants a trade, he's started THROWING again and he's a vegan. Over it.

It's a bright spot if you use your space for QUALITY CONSISTENT players. Try hitting a home run like the redskins did for years, or like we did with nate clements you'll lose. Bolster the lines! Both o and d. Can't lose amassing talent in the trenches.

Where will the money go?

A fair amount will go to extending the contracts of the players the Niners decide they want to keep at the end of this season. For those who do well with Kelly et al., big paydays are on the way.

Don't kid yourself. $49.5 million isn't near enough to buy a championship with the roster we have now. That's 3 impact players added to a roster than has none and has no starting QB.

Hopefully Armstead, Buckner, and some of our other young players develop so we can be competitive 2-3 years from now. We'll need a couple good drafts and some further development if we want to bounce back.

I hope so. How long until the team is a serious contender?

With two more outstanding drafts, about 3 years from now.
Looking at our cap space which could easily be $75 million plus, I really hate the idea of a franchise tag. Could you imagine if Indy and Luck didn't work out a long term deal and we were the only team with enough $$$ to make him the highest paid player in the league? And on top of that we had plenty more to lure Alshon Jeffery. There's buying a contender. Stupid franchise tag.

I think by 2017 will be a strong team.

But whats your obsession with time ?

you can have all the players you want, the coach you want, the owner you want..and that still doesn't guarantee you anything in football.
Yuuuuge.
Who is a free agent in 17 that we can go after??? Any realistic names u guys wouldn't mind signing?
