I wish I could see this as a bright spot, but I just can't. We have become that team that players don't want to come to, unless they are overpaid to do so. The 49ers won't overpay. So the money goes unspent, and makes the York's pockets fatter. That is not going to be an incentive for them to change things, so we will continue to miss out on impact free agents next season. And the next. So basically, we are screwed until we can hit on a couple of really quality drafts, and completely turn the team around that way.

How does this relate to the 2000's. If anything, they learned that blowing loads of cash on FA's and playing close to the cap doesnt work. Anytime I see somebody say that the money goes back into Jeds pocket shows how little football knowledge is behind the post.

Doesn't a new four year rollover period start next season? From a rebuild perspective if you know you aren't going to be a contender in the last year before the cap spending minimum resets, it seems to me that it would make little sense to spend more than you have to that year. Next year (hopefully) we will know a lot more about what our needs are after (again, hopefully) getting all our young guys enough quality playing time to evaluate their talent. Coupled with being the first year of a new rollover period, THAT'S when I would think is when you would spend money, trying to hit as much of the minimum cash spend early. I dunno though I might be misunderstanding the cap spending rules.

Jed hires a CPA to mess with the books. The money goes to his off shore checking account.
For those asking, the remainder of cap room will be carried over into 2017, when the team will start to spend, as the new 89% cash spending limit is in effect, with the new 4yr period from 2017-2020.

It does not go into York or anyone else's pockets.

Mm said they can decide on how much they want to carry over the rest they get to keep.

That kind of gives us an advantage over teams that are already cap strapped, right? Also have plenty of guys to extend after this year. Reid, Hyde, Ward will be eligible, Lynch. Tank if he is effective.

Correct. After 2016 the 2014 class can sign new deals, so Hyde, Johnson, Lynch, Ward, right now Reid, Tank, and the 2013 class can already.

Not sure how true that is, some teams don't carryover all of it due to potential NLTBE incentives being earned, which would cover those. But most teams carryover it all. I've never heard of owners keeping the cap room, that's designated for the players, not ownership. The NFLPA would never agree to that kind of deal.
