"Aggressive"
"get after the QB"
"man coverage"

All that shows up on film from his days in CLE. Lots of pressure on the CBs to play sticky man coverage. I don't like that he plays so much straight up man coverage. It's a bit too predictable, although his blitz packages seem large in quantity. I made the comparison to ARI's defense earlier in this thread and the three traits that Chip mentioned above also describe ARI.

That absolutely is a great comparison to me. I'm glad you captured the quotes because I was going to edit and do the same. It helps explain the added CB's too and their skill sets (whether one likes the picks themselves or not is another discussion). Equally important, it reminds us how Baalke is working with O'Neil here and since we didn't draft any edge rushers, I wonder if he's happy with the quartet we already have especially with the ripple effect we can expect from getting Buckner.

"I think his package is likable, it's learnable, it's aggressive," said Kelly. "We're going to get after the quarterback. It's a quarterback driven league and you have to disrupt the timing of the quarterback, or you're going to get picked apart. It relies on a lot of man coverage on the back end."

"(O'Neil is) an outstanding teacher, that was one thing that I really gravitated to in terms of – the best coaches have the ability to get their knowledge to their players. And everything I heard about Jimmy, that kind of shown through," Kelly said. "That's what I've seen here in the three or four months that we've been working together."

Aw shucks, here I was hoping for another yr of Mangini, el famoso. As he says, his D is so complicated that it takes 2 yrs to learn it. I was looking forward to seeing us thrash around in his D and see if our guys really could learn it...or was he just full of b.s. One thing for sure. Nobody is going to miss his D sets, complicated and all, leaving the mid 1/3 of the field open and one pass after another completed there. They should have called him, "move the chains Mangini"....because that is what his complicated D did for us....moved the chains....unfortunately, for us....backwards.

Yeah , I really miss old mangenius....a legend in his own mind.

Good stuff. O'Neil had a pretty good pass defense with Cleveland in 2014. 2015 they fell apart. Makes sense why we tried to upgrade at CB all off-season. Went after Sean Smith, and were in on Josh Norman. Then drafted Redmond and Robinson, two guys who function best in man coverage.
sounds very aggressive. Pretty different from Magini's zone scheme and Fangio's bend don't break.
anyone nervous that our d scheme requires joe haden at cb?

No.

Every last one of the CBs on this roster are best suited for man coverage.
Good drop...i like the sound of how this defense will operate

It seems to me though that DC's like this who love to play man and blitz a lot need to have 1 shut down corner, like a revis or Peterson, for their defense to work really well. Like NC said, those DB draft picks makes a lot of sense now because the only DB on our roster before the draft that I could see having potential to play lock down man is DJ and he still has some growing to do.

I think Baalke drafted Robinson to hopefully fill that roll by next year while having Redmond focus on nickle duties.

Wholeheartedly agree!
Now Robinson is going to just step right in and play lockdown man coverage like revis? This place has officially went full on retard. I'm out
