I hope this guy works out. Mangini was roughly ten spots better in scoring than O'neil last year. I know different personnel and opponents matter, but this isn't a clear upgrade. We need some athletes on defense to get better no matter what.

The Warriors rank in the middle of the pack (18th?) in Pts allowed per game, but I think anyone that watches them play, doesn't think they're a poor defense.
It's just the style they play; they're such an efficient offense that the opponent is going to get a lot of possessions.

In basketball point allowed is a bad indicator. Better to look at opponents FG% and opponents 3 PT %Originally posted by FL9er:The Warriors rank in the middle of the pack (18th?) in Pts allowed per game, but I think anyone that watches them play, doesn't think they're a poor defense.

I saw one idiot's "grade" on O'Neil as our DC...gave him an "F". Wow. O'Neil hasn't coached a lick with the Niners yet...now, that's really some objective reporting, eh? Kelly likely hired O'Neil because he likes an aggressive defense. Let's face it, Cleveland's where coaches go to "die". They've had one winning season in the last 12. I'll reserve judgements on O'Neil and all of Kelly's coaches...the only fact so far is they're untested as a group. Any other "grades" or judgements don't mean a thing until they have a chance to actually coach.

Last year we went with untested coaches, and look where it got us. Repeating history again.

Tomsula's staff had more experience and ex coaches on hand than Chip's staff and they bottomed out. Might as well try it with less experienced coaches.

The same coaching staff that had a couple former head coaches and several former coordinators working as regular assistants?

What games were those? Maybe we should have beat the Giants?
We only won 5 games and 4 of those could have easily been loses.

while i agree That I do not like the O'Neil coaching hire. This is terrible logic on your part, not every untested coach turns out to crash and burn, good coaches need to get experience somehow. For example jim harbaugh was untested in terms of the nfl and turned out to be great, every coach has to start somewhere.
I am more worried about what the players in the cleveland said about him.

So now there's a report that Mike Nolan was interested. I'd have been happy to get him back a a DC, he was no doubt a good defensive mind. Why would chip pass him up?
