Head Coach Candidate Mike Shula

I still like the idea of brining in an OG either the Walrus or Tan Man, but I really like the idea of Shula. With what he did with Cam and playing to his strengths and letting him grow slowly I love that.

But we all know Jed is more than likely gonna drop the ball on this one. Only good thing is he is look for an offensive coach.

On January 25, 2007, the Jacksonville Jaguars named Shula their quarterbacks coach.[12] Shula oversaw quarterback David Garrard's development from becoming a full-time starter in 2007 to making the Pro Bowl in 2009. In Shula's first year with the Jaguars, Garrard ranked third in the NFL with a 102.2 passer rating – an almost 23-point improvement from the previous season – threw an NFL-low three interceptions and established a team record with a 64.0 completion percentage.

On January 21, 2011 the Carolina Panthers named Shula as their quarterbacks coach. In 2011, Shula helped quarterback Cam Newton earn Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year after turning in one of the most prolific rookie seasons in NFL history, passing for 4,051 yards and accounting for 35 total touchdowns. In 2012, under Shula's tutelage, Newton improved on his Rookie-of-the-Year quarterback rating from 2011 with an 86.2 mark while rushing for more than 700 yards for a second straight season. Newton's 7,920 passing yards from 2011-12 surpassed the previous mark for a player's first two seasons held by Peyton Manning.

Rushing - Ranked #2

Passing - Ranked #24 ranked higher than Green Bay at #25, yah I don't get that one. And they are also without Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess. Cam Newton still passed for 3,800 yard with 35 TD's, 49ers haven't had passing stats like that since Jeff Garcia.

And if the 49ers happen to miss out on Hue Jackson, then I'd hope they go after Shula. Something tells me or my gut feeling tells me that they are done with Chip Kelly, again just a gut feeling.

Would love for them to hire Shula. He's got HC experience and has background as a proven winner. Fits the mold of what we're looking for. Young, creative, offensive mind.

Not a fan. Before this season he was known as a very vanilla, very predictable playcaller. If you look at his career #'s as an OC, he's a run-heavy guy that has ever had a passing attack higher than 19th in the league. This guy was on the hot seat for getting fired last year as well.

Offensive coordinator Mike Shula isn't amongst the most popular folk in the Carolinas. But guess what, Panthers fans?



He isn't going anywhere, at least not in 2015.



In a recent interview with ESPN's David Newton, head coach Ron Rivera admitted he and general manager Dave Gettleman have not yet completed their evaluation process. With question marks surrounding some underwhelming staffers such as Shula and special teams coordinator Richard Rodgers, a possible personnel shift or two has been a relatively hot topic for fans of the NFC South champs.



"We're unfinished with the process," Rivera told Newton. "We get back on [Wednesday] and we'll sit down and finish everything up and then start getting ready for free agency and the draft."



Shula's two-year tenure orchestrating the offense can be effectively summed up with the term "vanilla." Simple and predictable calls and a lack of game-breaking plays.



In his first year up in the booth, the Panthers ranked 26th in total offense—totaling just 316.8 yards and 22.9 points per game. And despite a considerable jump to 16th overall this past season—the unit didn't exactly strike fear into opposing defenses with 346.7-yard and 21.2-point averages.



A deeper look into the statistics doesn't help Shula's case either.



In 2014, the Panthers scored touchdowns on just 48.15 percent of their red zone visits—finishing 26th in the NFL. That percentage was a drop off from the campaign prior, where the Panthers' 52.08 conversion rate stood at 19th.



Carolina, additionally, finished in the bottom half of the league in overall efficiency on offense. According to Football Outsiders, the Panthers' Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) came in at -5.0% with their Weighted Offense value at -7.4%.



Shula has also drawn some sharp ire from the fan base for the regression in Cam Newton's passing numbers as well as a failure to help Newton establish more sound mechanics.



Prior to Shula's arrival, Rob Chudzinski was employed as the team's coordinator. Under Chudzinski in 2011—the Panthers were seventh in total offense (389.8 yards per contest), fifth in points scored (25.4), third in rushing (150.5) and 13th in passing (239.3). Newton, in his rookie campaign, threw for what is still a career-high 4,051 yards and followed with 3,869 the year after.



With Shula, Newton chalked up 3,379 passing yards in 2013 and 3,127 in 2014. The Panthers ended with 21 big pass plays (t-30th) in 2014 and 23 (t-30th) in 2013.

But isn't it about offensive philosophy of the Head coach or OC??? If one favors the run more than the pass of course it may look vanilla or conservative. Shula has actually done a pretty good job calling plays this year, sure the defense and their takeaways are big factors but it doesn't take a top 5 or 10 offense to get you into the Super Bowl. In 2012 the year the 49ers went to the Super Bowl they had the 11th ranked offense, in 2013 the last NFC Championship the offense ranked 24th. I think if you have a solid defense with an offense that can be consistent can get you into the playoffs year in and year out pending injuries of course, but that is the exact same formula Carolina is using right now.

With that said, with all this Mike Shula talk, I doubt York and Baalke wait another week or two to hire a new head coach.

I think this is probably the case. My guess is they like Hue, but aren't putting all the eggs in that basket. They seem to be feeling out all the other options to find a good secondary option or see if anyone else blows them away.
