When you peel back the onion. This season has been a clusterf**k. The fact that we could possibly end at 7 and 9 / 8 and 8 is mind blowing. Not only that. If we had any. Any offiense early on we could perhaps have taken Green Bay and Giants. Obviously. What "ifs".

We had a terrible offseason. We had so much go wrong during the season. Straight voodo type of stuff. I know this season is basically over. No chance at playoffs. But I still believe in the future of this franchise. Lots of cap and draft pics coming up too!

The fact we're currently slated to pick 8th in the draft and not 1st is an achievement in and of itself. What excuses do those other 7 teams have? We just went through the worst off-season in sports history lol..

Yet the team continues to compete, and while this season has been rough, we're starting to discover which players are part of the future. Gabbert emerging as a bright spot has been a pleasant surprise. If he emerges as a decent starter, maybe this season wasn't a complete disaster.

Part of me wants to be as optimistic as OP. But the other part of me looks at seasons like the end of 2008 where we ended 5-2 and the following season we laid an egg after starting 3-1 and missed the playoffs again. This forum is up and down, feeling we are the worst team in football after a loss and suddenly there's hope after a win. The truth is, the future is really a big question mark right now, especially with the amount of parity in the NFL. Best case scenario, OP is going somewhere and next season, we will [legitimately] be in the playoff race again at this time of year. Worst case scenario, we are in another 2003-2010 drought. Hopefully the former turns out to be correct.

If Gabbert plays well for the rest of the season, grabs us a couple more wins (hopefully two against Cleveland, Detroit or St. Louis; if we lose to Cleveland the joy of this win will completely vanish), we have an excellent draft, York is willing to make a couple changes to the coaching staff (preferably the coordinators), and free agency goes well, then maybe, just maybe I can be hopeful that we will be a playoff team next season. But all of that falling into place is not very probable. The realistic being in me says we will be flying low for maybe 2-3 more years, mainly because I don't see any coaching changes until next season at the earliest.

They gave AZ all they could handle and Seattle the week before. Let's not forget the refs cost them the game against AZ IMO. Not as bad as people make out. Tomsula is a first year coach, Geep has not called games in years, nor has Mangini. Starting to learn personnel and with match ups (this year) against some of the best teams and QB's in the NFL, this is the kind of season a young team needs to have. They fight hard but don't have the experience. New players emerging like, Tartt, Gabbert, Tiller, Hodges and DB's are only going to get better. Very very young team folks, good things to come!

Good post, OP. Not at all koolaid-ish, IMO.

I like that the team is showing fight. The talent levels are very low right now, but the players are showing pride and effort. I like how some of our draft picks are shaping up (like many others here, I loved the Tartt pick on draft day), and I think Mangini is really working minor miracles with the very limited resources available to him.

Obviously having the league's worst scoring offense is offensive (har, har) for a team with our history, and at times our coaching staff seem to be overwhelmed. And the less said about the disgusting situation at the front office the better.

But we might have a solid basis for improvement next year. I think that 6-10 is the most likely record for this year, which should have us pick around 10-12. That could get us a solid player in positions we need immediate help at (OL, pass-rush, MLB, corner), or perhaps even a young QB who we can afford to sit behind Gabbert while he gets familiar with the speed of the game at pro level. If we target the right sort of FAs (OL most obviously) we could be at least respectable next year.

What might go wrong of course is we go 0-4 for the rest of the season, panic, fire everyone and go through ANOTHER dysfunctional coaching hiring process, panic more and spend a Top 5 pick (at 4-12 this is where we'll be) on an overrated college QB who goes through the usual Deer-in-the-headlights rookie trip when faced with a pro pass-rush, and end up 6-10 NEXT year, while all the while having to read what Jed's Leak Factory is providing the beat writers about it all being the coach's/coordinators/cap guy's/tea lady's/janitor's fault.

The schedule isn't talked about enough. It has been brutal. We came into the game winless on the road and preparation has a lot to do with it but we are also number 1 in travel miles.

What i have been saying for the last couple days, which makes me see things different,

Is the fact that we could have been 6-6 Right now! Which is weird to think, because it feels like we've had a worse season than that.

But had we beat NYG, and Not got screwed against Arizona, We'd be 6-6, which basically to me shows that we're turning things around.

Even though we are 4-8, with a pretty favorable schedule for the rest of season, especially if we can keep this up. We could end up 7-9 or even 8-8.

I still feel like we need to replace some Coordinators, but the turn around, and some of the moves we've made has finally got this team starting to look solid again.

Either way, big win yesterday.

clusterf**k is the best most accurate way to describe this season an previous offseason. the only thing we had to look forward to out of this whole garbage of a year was the draft coming up and having a top 5 pick to grab a big playmaker like hargreaves or bosa. we can kiss our playmaker goodbye with these pointless wins in garbage time against teams like the bears and maybe browns and lions too. sry but im one of the fans that realizes at this point were at, losses do us better than wins. i was a niner fan before this year and i will be a niner fan for many years after this so im concerned with the overall state an record of the franchise not just this year and anyone who has been a fan long term knew this season wasnt going anywhere good after the games in pittsburgh and arizona. this year is done, get ready for the draft try to get a playmaker an practice for 2016 where we will have had time to get ready an not dealt blow after blow like this last offseason. winning against the bears did nothing positive for this teams future, a little locker room moral boost for a day in the middle of one of the most embarassing seasons ever wont get us any closer to a SB, and besides its gonna be AT LEAST a year from now until we can even possibly contend for a SB chance. now were stuck with a pick probably above #10 and wel end up getting a linemen anyone could pick in the 3rd rd.

Totally disagree. There is no guarantee that any of these players will be "playmakers". There's also something to be said for cultivating some team confidence and pride, especially among young players. Tanking a season doesn't work as a rule. See the Sixers who have been tanking season after season and are still putrid despite their high picks. Or see the Browns. Or the Jags. Or the Rams. Tons and tons of Top 5 picks, and where are they now? Anyway, we're not talking about picking Top 5 vs picking #30 or #31 as we did during those (all too few) good years. We will still almost certainly pick around 9-15 if we finish (as I expect) 6-10. You can get excellent players there. Just as an example, in 2007 we picked Willis at #11; Lynch was right after him, and Revis two slots after. Yes, Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas and Peterson came before them, and they've been excellent, but so did Ted Ginn, Levi Brown, Gaines Adams and (of course) JaMarcus The Hutt, who weren't. If anything, I tend to prefer picking later in the Top 10 or even early in the Top 20 as there is less pressure to play a high draft pick when he's still too raw.

if this team really moves on from kap for this guy they will prob regret it, i think kap should be given chance to come in and compete in camp next year. he played w/ a torn labrum

sitting back might allow kap to see the benefit of checking down faster by seeing gabby check down so fast every play, there is a happy medium

Yea they 4-8. I'm really not that positive bout the squad right now. Good win yesterday. That's all I take it as. The team goes up and down so often really hard to take anything from these games this season. Gabbert is playing a lot better than I thought is really the only overall observation I can take from this season. This staff still needs to fired and we still need to rebuild the trenches on both sides of the ball. And we still need to find a qb. We just beat the Bears. The Bears. I don't live in fantasy land where you start saying hey we should be 6-6 or 7-5 if etc. etc. etc. had happened.

I hear you but I think CK's time here has come and gone. Maybe he will learn at his next stop. CK won't check down any faster b/c he just isn't seeing the whole field.

I rather win and be happy on Sundays then to see the team lose and Paulk makes a good point. I know that playoffs are out, but who cares! i wanna win.

Kaep will never be able to conjure up the fight to compete for the 49ers after this season, it's in the best interests of the Niners AND Kaeperknick to push for a quick and easy divorce , its time to move on, I can imagine the front office already has Kaep's money for next year spent in their heads by now
