So, I just re-watched 49ers/Seahawks @ Candlestick 2013

To see Kap's only career win against the Hawks. Nothing much was made of this until last year maybe after we suffered our first home loss to this team since 2008, and obviously again a few days ago. It begs the question: How did we win.......especially against the best iteration of that Seahawk defense. Going to focus strictly on offense here, although I might make some notes from our defense at the end. Naturally Kap is priority #1, but also OL, RBs, WRs, and TEs as well as an offense is 11 guys not 1. This is what I've noticed: 1st half: Gore/Hunter running game - decent, but not dominant. Some good runs, some tackled for loss in backfield. This wasn't greatly aiding his game or making things easy compared to Lynch. Kap - Didn't do anything special as far as rhythm passes. The one noticeable difference is he did not play scared whatsoever. He attacked the sidelines numerous times, sometimes completed, sometimes not. One noticeable thing is how well the offensive line pass protected.......holy crap it looks like Dallas 2014 by comparison to what we've seen of late. Iupati didn't play -- Adam Snyder instead. Watching from the angle of the 49er offense going left to right on the screen, I would notice that Kap wouldn't always rotate fully on play action, so you wouldn't see his face on targets going to his left. On one play in particular he was lucky to get the ball off just in time to make a sideline completion but did not appear to see Cliff Avril who would have easily gotten a strip sack fumble had CK held onto the ball a tad longer. The middle of the field in general wasn't used a whole lot. No throws to RBs, TEs until past the 2 minute warning (out pass to Miller....a short pass thrown across the field to Vernon that picked up a first down in the red zone, and then the 6 yard TD to Vernon). Crabtree/Boldin/Manningham - Crab would be targeted mostly on the sideline against Byron Maxwell, and he made a sick catch in the 1st quarter (back shoulder throwish). A few penalty flags were drawn against Maxwell, and another was missed that was going down the sideline that could have extended a drive into the red zone. Boldin made tough catches in the middle mostly. A few of these were decisive bullets from Kap under center, sometimes off play action. Of course there was the long pass from CK that he caught right on Sherman as he was being interfered with that many of us remember......credit to CK for extending that play, throwing to his right and delivering a very nice catchable pass. At the 2 minute warning, here was the QB comparison: Wilson - 8/11 144 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 144.5 rating Kaepernick - 5/14, 63 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 50.6 rating 2nd half: On opening drive, Kap hits Crab on a sweet play design on 3rd and 2.....Crab lined up on outside with Boldin on inside slot, Crab runs underneath and is wide open. CK hits him nicely in stride and he has a nice gain on that play (this is the play that Crab fumbled and was ruled down by contact). Later on with 3rd and 2, they do a zone read which was sniffed out by Malcolm Smith....Kap attempts to make a move on him and fails, loss of 6. On 2nd drive, Kap makes two nice sideline comebacks....one to Boldin, one to Crab. Both snaps taken under center, no play action. Then a nice run in the middle by Gore for 15. Then Kap under center, good protection, scrambles to left and throws back inside to the middle to Boldin for a first down. It took him a few seconds to make the throw, but made it. On the very next play from the 20, Crab lobs a sideline fade to Crab and it was intercepted by Maxwell. Whether underthrown, or interference......not going to scrutinize this play as I would have rather seen this type of attempt the other night than nothing at all. On 3rd drive, CK opens under center, play action....takes some time looking left and throws to Gore at sideline and misses (he missed to Miller earlier in game in similar fashion). On 3rd and down to open the 4th quarter, Kap takes shotgun snap has some time but either finds no one open or doesn't pull trigger and gets sacked. On 4th drive, drive starts with play action then after time delayed scramble for 8. On a 3rd down and 7, Kap makes a nice Wilson-esque scramble inside the pocket buying enough time to hit Boldin for a first down (but negated by a holding penalty). On 3rd and 17, Kap gets sacked under heavy inside and outside pressure. On 5th drive and final game winning drive, CK opens under center, rolls right, finds no one open and scrambles for 4. Must note that in this game I saw a bunch of times CK was a bit more decisive in scrambling and getting yardage in such situations, getting 3-6 yards on average as opposed to now where it seems like he's lucky to get back to LOS (in general.....not just against Seattle). A clip highlights that the 49ers last 4 possessions were 3 punts and an interception......but at same time, all of Seahawk possessions in 2nd half were punts except for one field goal (and SF wins on FG, so essentially equal.....defenses dominated the 2nd half for both teams, at least in preventing points). Then the magical 51 yard run by Gore. A few runs by RBs. Then the awesome CK scramble that I forgot actually got a first down.....huge play. Was run with a 5 WR set....only had OL to block and he made it happen. More impressive watching it again than at the time. Considering we would have been forced to kick an FG with about 2:40 or so versus 26 seconds, that could have saved us possibly losing the game with some Wilson/Seattle luck on their final drive. Kill clock, kick FG. Pick off Wilson, win game. Overall, it just seemed like CK felt more comfortable playing in this game than he has in a majority of games we've seen last year and this year. He didn't necessarily look BETTER, more fluid, etc. I actually think CK *at his best* this year looked very similar to how he looked in this game. Now, that's CK going against a better Seahawk team versus CK going against average teams......so what I saw in this game was probably more impressive. But the thing to keep in mind is that CK never looked fazed or rattled in this home win versus the Hawks. We know what it's been like @Centurylink, but even then he's played better there as of late (even last year's game was better than these last two home games). Hawks had better defense, and so did we. Something to note is that Wilson looked better in this outing versus this tough 49er defense than he has against most teams recently. He was never a carver, but he made some nice throws in this game.....some from pocket, some out of pocket. More or less the QB play was very similar in this game. Wilson also had more weapons too in this game.....Zach Miller, Luke Wiilson, Golden Tate. Not sure if I can draw any real conclusions about CK's future based on what he did in this only win versus Seahawks. I would say he could absolutely beat them if we can get some decent OL protection from him. Vernon Davis didn't do much this game, Manningham did just about nothing (although in fairness he was coming off an injury). So it was pretty much the same weapons as now.....two solid WRs (swap Crab for Torrey Smith), and good RBs (Gore for Hyde.....maybe slight edge to Hunter versus our #2 now). Hyde could definitely have a good game against the current Hawks defense if only we could get a nice flow in the passing game. So hopefully this can be therapeutic in analysis.....I tried not to watch with a biased eye either way for our offense. The eye test for the Seahawk defense in this game was that they were good but nowhere near as smothering as our last two home games have been or anything like playing in Seattle. Our redzone production supposedly leading up to this game was 6th in the league, but we still kicked FGs.

also that game was probably the last farewell for adam snyder, and he ended it with a bang
cant believe I would take him right now over our clowns on the right side in a hurry

Over on .NET, it wasn't Gore doing anything special but Thomas misdiagnosing the play.

BTW, do you know who Gore run over on his final (and last 49er TD so far) against Seahawks?
