I think Easton replaces Martin this week and then Thomas will replace Devey in a few weeks. They won't make all the changes at once.

If Thomas who is physically in his first year as a player, an epic bust in the making (fyi I did not know 3rd rounders could become epic busts) then so are the 9 out of 12 interior linemen taken in the first 3 rounds this year who are not starting for their respective teams. 2 of those non starters were first rounders, and only 3 interior linemen were drafted in round one.
Those numbers speak to the OL epidemic being talked about in league circles. Appears gone are the days that you can count on taking OL early in the draft and pencil them in as day one starters.

Thomas is riding the bench on the worst Oline in the league. What arguments do you need?
The fact that he can't beat out arguably one of the worst guards in the NFL over the last two years isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for a third round pick.

Of course he can. You can say that about any player.
But, as of now, backing up the worst linemen in the league isn't a good sign. Of course, this coaching staff is stupid so its harder to tell.

he is just a Talent, not a developed player. you do get the difference, right?Originally posted by itlynstalyn:The fact that he can't beat out arguably one of the worst guards in the NFL over the last two years isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for a third round pick.

Or maybe either he needs further developing because OL are not really pro ready anymore or has yet to reach his previous playing form which is common with some coming off of ACL tears.

You know Jordan Devey was the lowest-graded guard in the entire NFL last year, right?

That much is obvious, but the fact that he can't beat out Devey doesn't really make me confident in that happening at the moment.

Yup. The ACL issue makes it worse.

yes, i do.Originally posted by itlynstalyn:You know Jordan Devey was the lowest-graded guard in the entire NFL last year, right?
saying that it is kind of a bad sign, like Young2Rice did, is ok.
but a bust in the making?
a different theory:
they started devey over thomas not simply based on quality but based on experience whereas Thomas was the superior candidate quality-wise. perhaps they simply didnt want two inexperienced guys in the middle of the line especially when someone takes into account that Martin was inconsistent last year too.

You'd rather have a guy who's more experienced but worse quality-wise on the o-line? I want guys out there that can help the team win games and it's already painfully obvious it's not Jordan Devey. Tomsula really doesn't have much to lose letting Thomas get reps instead of trotting out the worst guard in the league game after game. Unless you think Tomsula is intentionally trying to lose or doesn't know what he's doing, then the only possible explanation is Devey is better than Thomas.

inexperienced players tend to be inconsistent. this is bad enough.Originally posted by itlynstalyn:You'd rather have a guy who's more experienced but worse quality-wise on the o-line? one more inconsistent player in a new o-line could have ended in an even bigger disaster.
or, they havent expected such a bad outcome.

The only thing Devey is consistent at is being terrible as a guard. I'd hope our coaching staff would be starting Thomas if he was any better right now.

you dont pull an o-liner that quick after a shake-up and a system switch because growing pains could also be the reason for the bad play. therefore you have to wait and see a little bit.

When they're one of the worst guards in the league you do, especially if you have something better. This seems to not be the case with Thomas.
