You have to understand the PFF scores. These are professional scouts watching every minute of game film every week, and grading each individual player with a discerning eye on every play. Obviously they cant know every assignment, but they paint a far better picture than any blind, basic stat out there.

Bowman isnt having a good year. I can see it just watching on gameday. He doesnt trust his knee. He cant stop and cut like he used to. He can get up to full speed again, but stopping to change direction is like watching a big rig with bad brakes. In the run game hes almost back to normal, but he gets torched in pass coverage.

Im not blaming him, because his injury would have ended most careers. But you can tell that hes just not the same player. He made the pro bowl because he has a ton of tackles, which dont always signify a great player. A good ILB will always have a ton of tackles on a bad defense.

If you contact PFF via email, they will let you know exactly why Bowman has graded out so poorly this year. I tried challlenging them on Ahmad Brooks' crap rating in 2013, and got owned. They know exactly what theyre talking about.

You also have to consider the snap count. Bowman has over 1,000, and Armstead only has 339. The sample size is much smaller. If Armstead had played 1,000 snaps, he likely wouldnt have kept his score so high. Hes only being played in spots that give him a chance to succeed.
Patton with the worst cumulative score on offense? That makes sense, I can't believe the guy is still hanging around.

Bell and Torrey Smith are lower. Smith has dropped so many balls this year...

Bowman, has been ok, but like you said rusty

The difference between the top 3 and bottom 3 OL is amazing

Fitting which player Devey, Martin, and Pears dragged down with them.

I'm taking Armstead, Lynch, and Carradine's pass rush grades with a grain of salt. PFF seems to be very favorable to pass rushers if the 49ers are given a cumulative grade of -1.5 there and a pass coverage grade of -30.7. I think our lack of a pass rush is as big of a problem as our lack of good coverage linebackers and safeties. Our linebackers are close to -25 in pass coverage on their own and Tartt and Bethea are both negative.

I'll be interested to see what Williams makes in free agency and whether his contract is impacted by his PFF grade.

Thanks for updating this!

NP. They grade on QB hurries, hits, and sacks. I think we just dont use our pass rush correctly. Lynch pressures the QB almost every play. He just rarely gets the sack because he gets no help. Opposing teams know who to worry about. Armstead and Carradine have made a big impact when theyre on the field, but both have only played a combined 550 snaps. So about 25% each. I have no idea why they arent out there more often.

Bowman isnt having the successful comeback that people think he has. Maybe he'll be less rusty next year...

Thanks for posting these. Saves me $50, or whatever the fee is. I put more value in PFF's cumulative scores than their one game scores because of the larger sample size.
My surprises:
- Devey ranked higher than Pears. As bad as Pears is, I thought Devey was much worse.
- Brock with a positive grade.
- Dial with a positive pass rush grade. I think he's rather ineffective as a pass rusher.
- AA's positive run defense.

One thing I do agree with that some may gloss over is Tartt's pass defense. He is lost in open space and really struggles as a deep zone defender. I know many have raved about his performance, but he really needs to improve in this area or he will become a box safety. And if that's all he is, then he better develop his tackling. Although tackling seems to be a team wide problem so it's hard to say if this is solely on him.

NP. Its $30, but they dont offer the premium stats anymore. I wont subscribe next year if they take these away.

Where's the grades for mental mistakes? How many negative points did the defense get for having 7 offsides penalties yesterday?

Penalties are graded in the penalty part. It's the last item.

I guess all these ratings could be taken with a grain of salt, but I'd be interested to see if pass rush grades are positive for every team. It's pretty interesting that our pass rush grade as a team is almost neutral when our team has had almost no pass rush all year. There could be good and bad pass rushers, but I'd expect the team total to be way more negative than it is. I just think this may be biased and it may be more difficult to get a negative grade as a pass rusher than it is in pass coverage (missed assignments, fail to make a play on the ball, penalties, etc.).
Without seeing ratings around the league, it's tough to know whether pass rushers just tend to be rated higher because they have fewer negative plays.

Look at who made that grade. Armstead, Lynch and Tank are the only to have +2.0 pass rushing grades or more.

On a per-snap basis, Devey is worse than Pears.

On a per-snap basis, Boldin>Smith>Patton>Ellington>Simpson, so our distribution of snaps makes sense.

The pass rush grades seem inflated given this is saying the 49ers receive a neutral grade at rushing the passer. Tank is supposedly a monster pass rusher with a much higher per snap grade than Lynch. I'm a little surprised Dial received a positive pass rush grade too. It may be difficult to grade 3-4 DL on pass rushing given their responsibility involves taking on blocks not always getting to the passer.

Its not so much that theres a bias, I think its just that rushing the passer is an easier job than pass coverage. Its harder for DB's and RB to avoid negative plays, because they have so many opportunities to blow a blocking assignent or get beat in coverage. Pass rushers often just pin their ears back and try to hit home runs.

So you almost have to grade each position individually. I think thats why they dont let you sort positional scores all mixed together. The results are relative to everyone in that position. Thats why they seperate 3-4 DE and 4-3 DE.
It's no surprise that Bowman's pass coverage game is below par still. That was always gonna be the last piece to come back (if it ever does).

one of our only good ST players
Carradine the 4th highest graded Defensive player on 211 snaps

smh
One positive to take away from this season is that we actually hit on the Armstead pick.

I have to admit, I thought hed be a bust. A young, raw "project" on the Niners? That usually results in 2 years of studying from the sidelines and being "eased" into playing time later on.
