We need to get that guy over here to do motivational talks for NRL clubs. Genius.

Drinking that during a 9ers game is definitely not gonna help my understanding of American Football. I like it!

But if you learn it while drunk, you'll always need to be drunk to understand it. Win win. Just like pool in the pub, you become drunken master only when you return to the state of when you originally learnt to play. My theories are 100% correct and never should be questioned.

You speak as one who has first hand knowledge of such things, so I am inclined to follow the advice given with gratitude.
Thoughts on Purcell getting some snap soon? Love seeing his pony tail bounce around.

Living in Bali for 2 years has taught me well. Pretty much all we do here is drink. I do all my best work drunk.....until I look at it the next day....speaking of which, cheers

Alright. My first regular season game of NFL. I f**king love this game! (except the ad breaks, they're the Milhouse of sports on TV) I was so freaking hype going in that I was sure I'd over sold myself on it and was going to be disappointed. I wasn't.

(non game related stuff)

I decided to follow the advice of several of the Vets here on the 'zone, and stayed clear of this place for game day post kickoff and much of the following day. As much as I could. It was tough. Visiting NN a lot helped some, but it's no replacement for the 'zone, and besides which, I [site decorum] hate their [site decorum] rules about [site decorum] profanity. A quick peek into the Hayne thread shows the warning was somewhat waranted but in the future I think I'll be risking it, because obvious trolls are obvious.

I loved, loved, loved the Aussie live blog of the game over at The Guardian Australia, and the US reaction to it. For those wondering, that's pretty much how we discuss sports amongst ourselves. I found myself reading it in Shooter Williamson's voice, it made it even funnier.

And onto the game...

Hayne (to get it out of the way)

The muff. Whelp. That happened. I feel bad for saying it, but I was actually GLAD that happened. Too much hype, we love him, but he's human and he's gonna f**k up sometimes. I wish it hadn't happened on his first ever regular season touch, but I'm glad it happened, and that it happened early.

Own it.
Fix it.
Move on.
(I love Jimmy T!)

Looked... decent as backup RB. Made some effective blocks in pass protection, albeit slightly awkward looking ones. This was an area I was concerned about going in, so I loved that he got to show his progress! Had one really nice run through heavy traffic too, which had as yet not been his strength. To me, he looked and moved the way I envision a RB looking and moving. Overall I'd say a decent showing. 3.25 YPC, IIRC. I understand that's considered decent? Not, you know, great or anything, but decent. A nice step to make the first man miss on one of his receptions was nice to see as well.

Over all, I was content with how it went for him.

Penalties

So many yellow flags, almost like watching Fomula1! Need to clean that up a bit, it seemed to kill the momentum of good drives so many times. Better in the second half. Better, not good.

Offensive Line

It seemed like Kaep had all the time in the world in the pocket! Gaps opening for rushers everywhere! I saw no sign of this OL weakness I've been hearing about these past months. A lot of TE work up on the line to support them can't have hurt, but man, I thought they looked formidable.

Carlos Motherf**king Hyde

I have no words. Wow.

Kaep

Looked comfortable. Looked in control. Took a hit that would have killed a lesser man like it was nothing. Couldn't seem to connect deep, or from the red zone, but otherwise I loved his play. I'd rather watch him play any day than I would one of the big name elites like Soft Balls Brady or Ol' Man Manning.

Defence

Our DL looked like they were moving their OL at will. Our LBs were every f**king where. Sacks. Sacks, sacks, sacks.

Bowman is the f**king man. In preseason he stood clear as the best man on the field, this time around he was surrounded by guys who had raised themselves up to high bar he sets. Still my favourite on the field, but oh so many were so very, very good.

Brock's interception. Stellar. Should have taken it to the house though, looked like he didn't realise he could just book it and run when he ran out of blockers.

Bethea looked impossible to beat. Tartt likewise impressive.

Maybe I'm just not a sophisticated enough NFL viewer yet, but I couldn't see anything in the D that I didn't like.

Returns

Didn't see as much of this as I would have liked, but Ellington looked to clearly be the better man on the night. Honestly I think it's my favourite phase of the game, most likely due to it being the most like what I'm used to watching.

The US sports media

Can all go get f**ked.

Looking for articles shortly after the game made me mad as hell. I can't find it now, but one of the first articles I read described it as one of the worst played games in NFL history. Others said we were lucky to win. Most could only focus on what Vikings should have done to beat us. No love for the Niners. Well f**k you they're my team and they won and I wanna hear you admit you were wrong about them.

I feel like I should have to have gone through the bad times to call myself Faithful, but I definitely bleed Red and Gold.
^ mate, fair go, you're making the rest of us look as clueless as we actually are with that post! What happened to standing by your mates?

This is a good drop

Quality post Frenz.
I gotta say I really hate trey wingo and nfl live, this was the show that notoriously said there's no way hayne will make it. Since then no mention of him, no "hey, we were wrong" when he made plays in pre season, no "boy is our face red" when he made the 53. But when he muffs the punt they're all over it. There was a real eager satisfaction in the way trey talked about. Can't wait for hayne to force them to kiss his ass.

People are quick to form initial mindsets and very slow to change them. We prefer to rationalise events so that we don't have to admit we were wrong about something, and we'll keep doing that even in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence because it's uncomfortable when evidence conflicts with our beliefs. It's called cognitive dissonance.

Then one day something happens which supports our belief, and we're all over it because finally there is 'proof' that we were right all along and we'll cling to that for a long time.

Hayne will need to tear up the field and consistently perform better than most others over an extended period before many will accept what he has done and even begin to trust him. Then the moment he screws uo, he'll be back to square one from their perspective.
