Listening to the Richmond vs North (AFL) game today and heard the commentators using the "stiff-arm" term. Not the first time that has happened but you could tell by the way it was said the guy had been watching Hayne footage. Interesting to see if that enters the vernacular here and displaces the more common "fend" or "don't argue".

I've noticed NFL terminology creeping into the game for years. Dennis Cometti in particular. He loves to reference the QB role when a player like Pendles/Fyfe/Gablett slows the game down and takes control of the situation.

Nfl is becoming more and more appreciated here. Everyone goes on about how crazy afl is for having no pads but i think people are realising how tough the nfl guys are too. These guys are twice the size of most footy players

I don't think AFL would be playable with pads

Na definitely not! Would restrict movement to much. Would be funny seeing the small nuggetty players, like caleb daniel from the bulldogs ,in full pads with his helmet lol

I'd love to see someone with photoshop skills put together some NFL-style uniforms for AFL teams. Pointless, but fun
OK. Hopefully some Americans can answer a Football 101 question for me.

What's the story with blitzes?

1) Is there a typical situation where you'll seem them (like 3rd and long or something)?
2) How do you "pick them up"? Surely the defence tries to hide them so what are the tell tale signs?
3) Much of the Hayne talk has been about him not playing RB until he learns to pick up blitzes. How long does it take to learn this? Is it a talent or a skill?

I remember commentators saying Peyton Manning is excellent at spotting blitzes so I assume not everyone can do it equally well?

Cheers

Looking for views from fellow Bandwagoners of our team and players rather than pollute other threads with lack of knowledge.
Not looking for all things Aussie or League, Union or their players discussions, we have Parking Lot for that.
Apologies to the Aussies/Kiwis/Fijians who were here as a fan before Hayne hit town.

I'll start with my views of team -
I think they are rebuilding this year and will show some flashes of brilliance but will have a bit of heartbreak along the way. New coach and a lot of new blokes in positions, going from a veteran type team to a young exciting team. They will stumble at start of year finding their feet but could come home strong if confidence doesn't take a beating at start of season.
I feel like they will play a very entertaining brand of football.
Offence Line- plenty of problems there and if not settled after a few weeks could be some cuts unless treating it as rebuild year and work with what they have for future years.
Defence - will keep us in the games
Special Teams - could be the difference in bringing some wins.

Views on some Players that stood out to me:
Kaepernick - what a bullet of an arm, can throw it long. But never gets the chance due to lack of protection! Can Run! and think first 4 games or so will be doing a lot of it just to stay alive.
Bowman - the few plays I seen of his in the preseason was awesome! What a weapon. Just found a way to get thru every time. Seems unstoppable.
Hyde - loved watching him in the tight stuff often finding his way thru. So that's what getting your pads down low looks like...
Pinion - what a booming kicker. Can't see many return yards with him.
Patton - dude runs backwards lol hard to forget that, even after scoring a blocking touchdown
Davis, M - can run in the tight stuff but has great catching hands and seems to be a mate with Hayne looking at Twitter.
Bush - feel like he will get more reception yards then rushing yards is how he will be used this year.
Miller - made those holes for Hayne in preseason so loved his work
Purcell - great pick 6, whatever that is lol. But after that took notice of him. Love what I see. Young, enthusiastic and exciting.
Ellington - can see this guy doing plenty of great and exciting things this year with his Speed and vision. Hoping to see some long stuff to him before Smith returns.

The Coach, seems to be liked by the players, a player manager type of bloke. Which means his support staff need to be great at the finer details and game planning as he will be relying on them in his first year. Hates giving away penalties can see him chewing out a lot of blokes over stupid penalties.

Anyway would love to see opinions from other Bandwagoners and maybe after each game give our unique view of how it went.

Go Niners

Welcome and thank you, mate!

That was actually very interesting to see a perspective from someone who isn't another team's fan, who may be envious or whatever about our team. The real first game is tomorrow night 7:20 pm California time. Hope you get to watch it! Hayne should be returning some kicks!

1) it depends on the team and scheme. The previous DC Vic Fangio didn't blitz very often at all so there was no typical. Mangini is a guy who likes to blitz so I expect them on any down. The key to a blitz is for the offense to not know it's coming so a good DC shouldn't have a typical situation.

2) picking them up means a running back blocking the oncoming blitzer. Generally the qb will indicate where the running back is supposed to go but sometimes it's on the back to also read the formation and know.

3) blocking is more something you want to do then a skill or talent. Hayne will need to show a willingness to learn. It's about knowing formations and film study.

If a defense is smart they will hide the blitz to the last minute or blitz from somewhere else while dropping a defender out (what is known as a zone blitz). The better qbs are able to see where the blitzer is coming from, point him out and adjust protections to pick them up.

Thanks champ.

So, it sounds like no-one really knows there's a blitz coming until it starts!

Does the QB have any actual time to direct operations then or does he just squeal Help!"!?

What're the options for the QB at that point usually? Does he try and change the play to still stay on attack or is it more about survival and just getting the ball away safely?

Thanks

Presumably, there is also a tactic to fake a blitz? Couldn't a fake blitz pull RBs and TEs off potential fake routes and runs to provide blitz coverage and thence blow up an offensive play??

This thread is a great example of what cool fans aussies make. Hopefully our presence in here can act a counterbalance, in some small way to our American hosts , some the inevitable, cringe-worthy behaviour we will see from some media outlets and others when Hayne succeeds and the media and the attention go stratospheric.
Makes me, proud to be an aussie
A question for my American friends, who apart from our quarter back has the green sticker on his Helmet and why has he been chosen to be mic'd up as well as Kaepernick?

Is there a certain position that gets the second mic?

I understand they are one way only so the players cant talk back?

cheers

One player on D receives the call through the mic from the D coordinator, it is the middle LB most of the time. I believe the players can talk back while the mic is live...15 seconds I think
