Does Jarryd Hayne make the team?

Still don't agree with you that league players have a side bias. If you want to play first grade, both have to be second nature. That's the nature of the game. If you play an open side, it gets used and you the need to play the opposite open side.

I have never seen or heard anything to suggest Jarryd has a weak or preferred side. He has classic core skills and carries on the far side pretty much always.

Case in point, his biggest fend so far was in left sweep, bl in left hand, fend with right.

Some positions in league have a side bias such as he halves. There are only a few halves that can play both sides otherwise the five eight is usually a left field half and the halfback is the right side. Johnothan Thurston and to a lesser extent (starting to do this season) Corey Norman can roam the field well and play both sides.

Fullbacks though need to be able to play both left and right as they cover a much bigger range of the field and sweep to join in on plays

Haynes strongest while he was at Eels was always his right side of the field when he would join up with Chris Sandow but in his last year his left side play was just as strong and us Eels fans were finally seeing his consistency that he lacked

Yeah, my comment was mostly in jest. Some strange s**t happens in sport sometimes though...
Hunter will be cut. He's one-dimentional and as many of you have already pointed out, Hayne can contribute on special teams.

RB's will be: Hyde, Bush, Hayne, Davis
First post: Hello from Australia!!

Well if there's one major plus it's the interest in the NFL generated in Australia. Generally, I've made a point of watching the Super Bowl as it's such a grand spectacle but without any emotional involvement for players or teams. From what I can gather, the 49ers aren't rated as a huge chance but you can bet that Australians will be tuned in and watching general NFL season games in pretty decent numbers. We love our sports, and our heroes here in Australia, and Jarrod Hayne's brave move has evoked an interesting response. There's been the usual nay-sayers vs the optimistic vs Hayne Playne fanatics vs Hayne Playne haters lol, with the Australian sports media hysterically reporting on everything before drinking itself into a stupor on a nightly basis :)

Personally I'm stoked at how well he's gone, and not just at being a special team (as is normal for outsiders of his ilk). Let me make the point here that I'm a Manly Sea Eagles fan, and Hayne comes from our oldest and most deeply hated enemy: the Parramatta Eels. I'm not sure how you rivalries go in America but here we loathe, despise and yet respect our rivals in pretty equal measures. This year, the Eels took us down twice, signed one our veteran forwards and also signed one of our gifted Halves for next season. b*****ds!!! It's easy to dislike them and their players, but Hayne has always fallen into the category of "too talented and likeable to hate". Add to that his heroism in State Of Origin clashes where he's been amongst the best on field in a soundly beaten team, and he's earned a massive amount of respect from ALL Rugby League fans (except for maybe Queenslanders, but they're weird!).

So it's been an interesting transformation to observe, but one I felt that Jarrod, of all current NRL players was most suited to. He's fast, agile and can take a hit, and dish em out too ;) It would seem that he's a pretty good chance to get in the squad and is well liked by the American fans, with merchandise sales already going great.

So anyhow, hello again from Australia, I'll keep an eye on this forum and contribute if I can: I'm hoping to learn more about NFL from you guys than I learnt from watching Varsity Blues!! Also guys like myself and Natheel can teach you guys about Rugby League :)

Hunter was awesome as Gore's compliment.

I was going to say the Op has no idea but I see he has stopped standing on his head and has come to his senses.

He totally deserves to make the cut and should be a starter(non biased Aussie opinion of course) so hopefully it goes as planned.

Really that 5% No have no idea.

Welcome from Australia! Hayne probably makes this team. His ability to track down a ball and grab it I believe are second to none. His hand are absolutely amazing. Couple that with his rare ability to see the field and find a path down the field and he is a lock for the final 53. He doesn't run like and NFL player, but he finds ways to get down the field and elude tacklers or dish out a hit.

It is kind of bizarre watching him. He isn't crazy fast, nor does he seem super agile, and yet he finds ways to make guys miss or plows through them. It is almost like he is floating around the field, I can't describe it accurately. But it has truly been a joy to watch him play this preseason and I really hope he makes an impact during the regular season.

Lol Welcome mate :) There is probably more Aussie, Queensland supporters than NSW in here tho ;). Maby we Qld'rs are just more vocal though .. Makes sense I guess I'd probably choose not to tell everyone I'm a blues supporter too.. I mean 9 losses in 10 years.. Wouldn't want anyone reminding me of that.. Ouch

Thanks :) Do you see similarities in his game to William Green? That's who he reminds me of.

Upright running, stiff arms, plants his foot to step, looks slower than he is.

MANY backs run upright mostly. There's cases you get low, like up the middle short yards. Overall.. I want to have vision, balance, cuts. Hayne..has that..and he's new at NFL ball. As we saw.. he's quick and can slam a DB.

I thought Eric Dickerson ran upright, and I think he did ok.

He's a very fluid mover with a great instinct for finding space as he moves up field. He's adjusted well to having blockers running defenders off him and it gives him that little extra time to find a hole and exploit it. At least that's how it seems to me! Don't be fooled by his seeming lack of pace, he can motor when he pins it!

I know the shoulder charge got more press from yesterday's game, but for mine it was the little stop-n-go that fooled the first guy that came at him in that play. Beautiful little "Campese" style move on the massive dude chasing him. Just quietly, what position was the guy detailed to cover him there? So much to learn!

You guys are gunna get sick of Aussies (me!) asking stupid questions lol

Well..... Yeah.... It's been a bit brutal to be honest! Especially as I live in Brisbane and am from Manly (Sydney version lol). I've actually got Graham Eadie's Jersey from the 1980 State of Origin Wombat was a good mate of my old man's

You gotta wonder how blokes like Eadie, Meninga, Corowa, Beatson and the like, all big and fast in their day would have gone in the NFL. Naturally talented athletes head and shoulders above their peers... Then there's guys like Inglis, Lyon, Jennings or even a quick elusive bloke like Shaun Johnson from the modern era that could possibly have made an impact..

Yeah, he is extremely fluid...weaves through openings. I'm glad he got to show off a couple of new evasion skills as well as the shoulder charge in that last game. He has been quite restricted in what he's been able to show over the last 4 games, and if there's opportunity, so much more to see. I think yesterday's game helped his case a lot.
