Are there any 3-4 OLB's out there you guys feel we should make a deal for? ....and what would you trade to get him? would we trade a 3rd or possibly even a 2nd round pick to acquire an OLB that can come in and start from day one? IMO we might have to look for a trade partner and deal for an OLB before opening day, or do you feel we should put our trust in Harold, Lemon, Rush and Lemonier? thoughts?

Right! There is no possible way a team like the Chargers would trade a top-flight pass rusher like Fred Dean to the Niners. It just doesn't happen!

Yeah, Baalke would have to overpay for any OLB worth trading for. Why would any sane GM trade away a good pass rushing OLB?

All the players mentioned are closer to the retirement village than an NFL field. If the 49ers want to throw away money I'm sure these guys would listen. My dream is that a certain Mississippi graduate watched Bo last week and thought, I can still do this.

They don't need a guy for the next 5 years, they need someone to come in, play a few snaps this season and be effective.

Freeney may be up there in years, he's lost a step or two but he still had a very good season for San Diego in 2014. You could do a lot worse than him as a 3rd down pass rusher.

The Colts have shown no interest in re-signing their former star, but Freeney could still help a team looking for a spot pass-rusher. At 35, he's netted little attention on the open market, but his 40 quarterback hurries last season with the Chargers ranked third behind only Justin Houston and Ryan Kerrigan

After his 2013 season was cut short due to injury after just 0.5 sacks, he bounced back in 2014 to play in every game and record 3.5 sacks, also recording the third-most hurries and the sixth-most overall pressures (sacks, hits, and hurries) of any 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL last year

Lance briggs cant play 3-4 OLB I wouldnt trust him 1v1 versus a tackle. He is a cover 2 will, he chases ball carriers down and runs sideline to sideline. He is about the complete opposite of what we need.

This. Briggs would be best suited to be an ILB in a 3-4 scheme but the Bears and Fangio didn't even want him for that role. If you're looking at veteran passrushers, its basically between Freeney and the semi-retired John Abraham who is facing criminal charges for beating someone up at a strip club.

So basically its down to Freeney.

I posted some candidates that were free agents in the Brooks thread. FREENEY, Shawn Phillips, Kamerion Wimbley and Briggs were the most notable names. Personally Freeney and Phillips would be the only ones I would consider but I worry about Freeney in coverage since the olb are being asked to do that more this year and Phillips pass rush ability is not what it used to be

I think if Freeney were brought in, his only role out on the field would be to go after the QB with a full head of steam. He's not a guy that you bring in expecting to play him a lot of downs, last year he played around 500 snaps for the Chargers and was very effective in that range. Bring him in on 3rd down and let him get after the quarterback.

I agree. It would have to be limited for Freeney. But is a 3rd down specialist gonna be worth the money he is going to command? I say give him a one year deal with incentives and hope he bites. Lemonier is gonna see the field no matter if we sign anyone or not now because he is better in the run game. Unless a big name at OLB gets released it looks like Freeney or bust to me

He played some OLB way back before Urlacher retired. I think if I remember right he kicked to the middle when Ol' Brian went out to pasture.

In a 4-3 system. The 49ers mostly need someone that will be able to get after the QB, Briggs is not that guy.
