He spends countless hours in the film room. Please do not think this showing tonight is what he is like all the time. I am sure he was as nervous as ever. Give him time and he will develop into a great back up. He has a cannon for an arm and will show you that eventually. Give him a little rime. He will learn from the mistakes.

Thanks for sharing this and I wish him well!

An interesting play that hints at some of what Mangini is getting at with trying to cause confusion.

A QB sees this presnap alignment and may think cover1 or cover3. CBs up in press. And, only 3 DL. Is there a 4th rusher?

One of the ILBs is the 4th rusher. Safeties move.

QB goes to the Fade/Out combo to his right. Targets the quick out. Acker, not playing man coverage as if cover1, so he's not following the Go route. Acker is not bailing as if a cover3 1/3 defender. Sees this the whole way.

It's Tampa2. False presnap read baits the offense to attack a strong area of the defense. The flats of tampa2 is strong.

Bad coverage with a missed tackle allowed a return to the 17 yard line, but check out the possible field position change had coverage made the tackle.
b&w for small filesize
Mangenius has entered the building

Very cool. Mallett probably thought he had a mismatch with the LB covering the slot. WR broke outside and Acker was there waiting for him. Goes down as a completion, but score one for the defense there. Typical Tampa 2 bend but don't break defense. Nice play. Looking forward to seeing how Mangini continues to disguise coverage and eventually add blitzes to the repertoire.

These are the kind of disguising coverages you need to use against young qbs. it confuses the hell out of them and causes turnovers.

Could have been a 55 yard net punt if the tackle was made. I like Pinion, this kid has a big leg and gets hang-time on his punts. Should be very useful flipping field position all season long. We're gonna have guys like McCray and Tartt zooming down field, blowing people up. Should be fun.
PFF's notes from the game:

49ers:

–NT Mike Purcell finished with a game-high +4.2 overall grade, thanks in large part to his dominant performance (+3.0) against the run. Purcell finished with five stops, and positive grades in run defense, pass rushing and pass coverage.

–LB Shayne Skov took full advantage of his opportunity, starting the game at LILB and leading all defensive players in both snaps (66) and run-defense grade (+3.8).

–Backup guards Brandon Thomas and Andrew Tiller were impressive; neither player allowed a pressure in pass protection, and each finished with a +2.1 run-blocking grade.

Top 5 Graded Players:

Mike Purcell (+4.2)

Shayne Skov (+3.0)

Brandon Thomas (+2.7)

Andrew Tiller (+2.6)

Eric Reid (+2.1)

Nice play to free up Tartt.
Outside zone left
The RG has the following read. Combo block the NT, then move to second level (blue).
#48 will attack the C (yellow). The NT will loop around and engage the LG (red).

#48 hits the C. The RG still tries to combo block the NT, but can't reach him because he's looping around #48.

The LG is watching the action directly in front of him and doesn't see Tartt coming in late from his safety spot.-4 yards.

Tartt's gonna be a good one.

He has to be on the field this year. I don't know in what capacity, but they need to find a role for this guy. His closing speed, tackling ability, and instincts really pop out.
