Would the 49ers have made the 1999 playoffs if Steve Young had been healthy?

I think so. He had a poor start to that season before the career-ending concussion, but he was still an elite QB and coming off a great season in 98. QBs of Young's caliber can be the difference between 4-12 and 12-4, especially when you don't have a viable replacement. Garcia wasn't ready after just coming over from Canada. He needed a year to get settled in. Stentstrom was awful. The defense was bad, but the QB situation wrecked the season. A great QB can cover up a lot of flaws.
If Steve would have played to his 1998 level, I think they might have found a way to get to 9-10 wins. It's tough though that defense was god awful and the secondary is the worst I can remember. For my money 1999 is still the worst season in my time as a fan(1987 is when I started).

That first game at Jax was a 6-3 game at before a damn monsoon hit and jags rolled to a 41-3 win. They had a comeback win vs NO in the home opener and a 17-0 lead before motherfcking phillips missed that block. They then beat eventual AFC champ TEN with Garcia the next week. Season really ended after that game.

If Young was healthy in 99' it woulda been a 9-7 season and 1 and done in the playoffs. We would have averaged 27 points a game but given up 35 points a game.
Please correct me - getting old - But didn't Jerry also get hurt in that game and also by Sapp?

Yes, as has been noted in here previously, a HOF QB can cover up a lot of deficiencies on his team.

I doubt the 49ers could have gone very far if they'd made it, but Young would have gotten them there.

awful defense. you would have thought the team would have done something about it as the year before we had to beg a over the hill haley to come out of retirement. of course we had zero money and while i do not know this i will assume the draft sucked following the 98 season

you know,, if phillips had not gotten young hurt, it would have happened in another manner that year. i remember having a heart attack that year, every time young got hit. i never felt that way before that year. i remember feeling the same way about montana when i would see him in his last year as a chief.. i mean nothing to the world but whenever i get that feeling about our quarterbacks,,,, i know the time has come for them to retire.
Here is another question: which season was Steve Young's best?
I honestly think the 1998 season may have been. The guy was unreal, even in an older age.
Jesus is the season here yet?
