Trade Andy Lee?

I don't know how anyone could definitively say we should trade Lee before we know what we have in the guy we drafted. Most pundits and experts had the guy we drafted outside the top 10 in punters eligible to be drafted, so I don't see how most don't have a wait and see approach.

He'd better improve before the first regular season game, or he's going to be an ex-49'er.
agree, this is the nfl and if we can make ourselves better in any area, you do it,, if you can save some money that is a extra plus. everyone needs competition, even lee. not sure if you needed it in a fifth round pick but we are beyond that now. jesus, look at how many chances we gave roman only to get screwed time and time again.
didnt the raiders take a hall of fame punter in the 1st? maybe this dude is legit and everyone was sleeping on him because hes a punter and not worth a draft pick. or we just over drafted a punter

The guy is just not a punter. He's a kicker as well as a kick off specialist.

I'm talking about this years draft. How many punters were drafted this year.

Just Pinion was drafted.

Not sure if it's age or not-give-a-f**kness, but he's being paid way too much money to be a middle of the pack punter. This rookie only needs to be slightly above average to be better than Lee was last year. I would get the pick more if his college success was better, but I'm no expert so I assume he must be pretty impressive in his workouts.
Pinnion = Lee
ohhhhhh NT
You can't give up on Andy Lee after one bad year, he deserves more than that.

Andy Lee is a proven pro-bowler and was well above average in 2014:
#6 in gross average
http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/punting/sort/grossAvgPuntYards
#9 in "inside 20"
http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/punting/sort/puntsInside20
His net was only 15th, but that was because of a couple big returns allowed by the coverage

So it is not the avg yards per punt that needs to be considered, it is the net. Avg 48 yards, but allowing 10 yard return is less desirable than punting 42 yards and allowing 2 yard return, unless you can direction the punt so that it sails out of bounds but yet still get the yardage distance..
Lee had good hang time.
Allowing the 10 yards per return is mostly on the coverage units
Might be able to get a 6 or 7 for Lee

While it doesn't hurt to draft a back up for depth, we can't just give up on a pro bowl punter and look to trade him after one bad year, geez that's harsh.
Andy Lee will be fine.
This! Look, I love Andy Lee, he's the longest tenured 49er and at one time was an elite punter, he's still a good punter, but he's not worth elite punter money anymore. We drafted a punter because we think he might be as good or better than Lee is right now, he's definitely a better KOS than Dawson and most importantly, he's way cheaper than Lee.

I honestly think this has more to do with skill set than it has to do with money. Lee is basically a specialist in booming long kicks, and is pretty mediocre in the rest of his game. Pinion is basically a specialist in directional and placement kicking (and as a kickoff specialist) and is mediocre in the rest of his game.
Basically, they're trading the extra few yards on long punts for more consistently pinning teams back on shorter punts, and not having to rely on Dawson's old leg for kickoffs.
I totally get the strategy, and support it. The only puzzling part was spending a fifth round pick on a guy that very well could have gone undrafted anyway.

He also can handle KO duties, kicking them through the end zone almost all of the time.
His punts have a great hang time/distance combination - that is, he doesn't out kick the coverage. By the time his punts come down, even if the Gunners have been neutralized, there has been sufficient time that other ST members are surrounding the Returner. There will be lots of fair catches. Might be a few drops that can be recovered due to pressure during the catch.
This guy was selected in order to neutralize the Punt Return.

The extra spot that he frees up playing kicker and punter would be great. Plus having Bell on the team means we only need to carry 2 QBs and that would free up another spot.
Having two extra spots could make a big impact.

I agree with the point about Bell and Baalke even talked about how the scouts/coaching staff all agree that Bell can also serve as the emergency QB on game days thus freeing up the luxury to only carry 2 QBs on the 53 and probably one on the PS. But the point that the new punter (can't remember how to spell his name) frees up a spot is wrong. He's not a K, he's a P who is also a KOS, he won't kick FGs for us, he can come in and try the crazy 60+ yard tries at the end of the half or whatever, but he's not a guy who will pull double duty in the NFL as a P/K.

why do you say that? He can def try to be a all around P/K

Kicking the ball out of the endzone is over rated. What I would like to see is hang time on the kickoffs so the cover team can get to the returner early. Nothing bad comes from kicking the ball out of the endzone but nothing good either.
If Lee is having problems and will be physically deteriorating...Pinnion is a good pick up.

Not necessarily. When you play a team with a dangerous returner, I'd much rather take the safer approach and force them to attempt to drive 80 yards down the field against my stout defense than let their dangerous returner get a shot at giving them good field position or even take it to the house.
ohhhhhh NT
