what happened in that game? are you sure you do not mean the eagles game that year?

That was the game early in that SB season...Niners got off to a tough start that game and were down quick to the Lions in the Silverdome, the crowd was amped...Young, William Floyd and the team re-grouped, rallied together, and came back to win that game. Didn't Young get hurt early in that game after a sack where it looked bad when he was on the carpet...only to get up and have a great game?

That was the game in which Young got hurt badly but ended up returning and leading the 49ers to a comeback win.
Terry Kirby when he was stuffed for a 3 yard loss by a classic Candlestick gust of wind..

sorry, forgot about that... everyone talks soo much about the eagles game where he got benched and young went off on coach. yes thank you for reminding me,,,, i think there is something wrong with me,,. i can remember clear as a bell in 1976 where we sacked the rams qb 10 times in a game but could not remember that lions game from only 20 years ago funny you mentioned the lions in the dome.t. move forward to 2011 and the lions game in the dome was the game we won when i began to believe that team was going to be special

and we were over joyed when we traded for him!
There are so many...not sure I can name just one:

- OLB Dave Wilcox. He was in many ways the prototype OLB ...he was big, fast and loved to knock QB's down. He was as tough as they come.

- DT Bryant Young. One of the best DT's in Niner history. Tough, smart and consistent...a player's player.

- DB Ronnie Lott. He may just be the toughest of all of 'em...he was genuinely feared on the football field. The opposition always had to know where no. 42 was.

- QB Steve Young. Rare combination of exquisite passer and incredible runner. He took a lot of big hits...and unfortunately, thanks to that lunkhead Lawrence Phillips' failure to pick up the blitz, Steve's career ended prematurely.

- OT Bob St. Clair. The Geek, as his teammates called him, was one tough SOB. 6-9, 275 was huge when he played and he led the way for a ton of Hugh McElhenney, Joe Perry and J.D. Smith big runs.

- QB Y.A. Tittle. They knocked him down, he'd get up and throw a killer TD pass next down. He was old school...tough and ornery as they come. Whatta QB.

- OLB Charles Haley. #94 was a terror...QB's feared him. He was mean...he was relentless. He was Charles Haley. Letting him go to Dallas was a huge mistake...but he'll go into the HOF as a Niner!

I know this is about the toughest Niner players...but I have to include this one WRT the toughest SOB in NFL history, Dick Butkus:

Dick Butkus was the angriest, most ferocious, menacing, and yes, toughest player to ever play the game of football. Butkus's opponents claimed that Butkus was like an odor that you could feel or sense on the field. Anything loose—a knee pad, a shoe, a chin strap—would be ripped off by a Butkus tackle. Butkus has bitten officials, bitten opponents in the groin, scratched, punched, everything. Going across the middle against Dick Butkus was considered attempted suicide. Butkus was a turnover machine and earned eight Pro Bowl selections in his nine seasons. Steve Sabol had the following to say about Butkus: "His career stands as the most sustained work of devastation ever committed on any field of sport, anywhere, any time."

Two time comeback player of the year Garrison Hearst
For a guy who didn't have much size, speed, or a ton of athleticism and did it all with nothing but heart, Bill Ring comes to mind.
Hmm, players that's been here since07 I would have chosen gore but Cowboy never missing a snap or start for something like 8 yrs and when he finally gets hurt he comes back 6 weeks later and plays through an injury (Torn Tricep) that puts most out for the season. Even though his game is completely based on strength he still got the job done with one of the worst injuries you can have at the position.
Sunday night football 1995 against Buffalo. They were on the 1. Kelly hands the ball to Kenny Holes...Gary Plummer meets him helmet to helmet as Holmes tries to hurdle the line. Holmes fumbles the ball, Lee Woodall scoops it up and takes it 94 (IIRC) yards for the score. Merton Hanks was like a pinball keeping the Bills from running him down. One of my alltime favorite plays.
