A wise old friend of the family once told me about football: "You bet on the jockey, not the horse".

That rang true when Harbaugh came into this organization and turned it around. They had all the talent but without elite coaching it means nothing. It'll ring true in reverse fashion with this second-class coaching staff. I see a lot of people basing predictions on "talent alone". It doesn't work that way and if you watched this team in 2009 and 2010 you should know that. There's a reason no one else was knocking on these coaches' doors.

Hoping for the best but logically expecting the worst. I've seen this happen in SF before and its never worked out well.

Everything I know about JT indicate Singletary isn't even close to being in his league when it comes to a complete intellectual knowledge of the game, Xs and Os, and overall coaching history.

Now what am I getting at here? Singletary somehow managed to get the 2009 49ers to 8-8 under a borderline horrific staff leadership that featured Jimmy Raye as OC and Greg Manusky as DC. Also, let's take into consideration the talent and players he was working with. That 2009 roster featured the following players:

Shaun Hill - started 6 games
Adam Snyder - started every game at tackle
Chilo Rachal - started every game at guard
Josh Morgan - started every game
Isaac Bruce - started until Crabtree signed.
Michael Crabtree - started every game after missing the first 5 games holding out for a better rookie deal.
Barry Sims - started 7 games when Staley was hurt. Sims was out of the league after playing here.
Nate Clements and Shawntae Spencer were the starting CBs
Mike Lewis and Goldson were the starting safeties.
Isaac Sopoaga was the starting LDE.
Arnaz Battle and Michael Robsinson were the starting KR/PR men.


To say we had all the talent back then seems just.. insane to me.

great post. My only worry is that the 8-8 record with Singletary could also be inflated because the division was the weakest in the Nfl at the time. It is the strongest now, which does make a key difference

Last year had several close games that could have gone either way so I feel like our 8-8 was a bit underrated. I think if we see a drop-off, it will be in year 2 or 3 post Harbaugh.

I do think that could be a valid point as well. However, I think the combination of factors now vs. then still ultimately indicates we should do better than 8-8.

Positives:
HC Now > Singletary
Staff Now > Sing's staff
Team talent >>> 2009/10 Roster

Negative Factors:
More competitive division in 2014


One final note though that also needs to be considered, even though the 2009 team played in a weak division, that year they had 8 games against teams that were either playoff teams or teams with winning records. Last year, the 49ers played 9 such games. Overall I think if you look at that, you may be able to take out the "level of competition factor" between the two teams.
