Anyway, most of us who believe Kap should get another chance are not claiming he is better than Newton, only that he had very similar potential. The difference in the two comes down to coaching and situation, something that has favoured Cam significantly, although he has rightly worked hard.
I'm tired of reading the same self propagating crap from a number of posters about 2 years worth of regression and yada yada... while they ignore absolutely everything related to circumstance. What is hysterical, and indicative of the stupidity of those posters, is the development of Cam due to his environment. Newton was slated last year when he was discussed, with questions over his maturity, intelligence, work ethic and ability but the Panthers stuck with him and showed faith. They invested in his OLine and weapons (most of who were injured this year) and the result is that they are now going to the SB.
Meanwhile, a vocal element of Niner fans with an inability to consider circumstance, are busy accusing Kap of all those baseless attributes Newton was accused of. They ignore the 2014 OLine problems (Marcus and Jonathan Martin) and lack of offensive weapons, with bad play calling, and blame Kap for an 8-8 injury plagued season.
They cite 2015 as a year of horrible regression, but not one of them ever addresses why we tried to force Kap to be a pocket passer behind the worst Oline in football in Pears, Devey and Martin. There is an inability to process the fact that to become a pocket passer, you first need a pocket to pass from. Lo and behold the OLine Cam works behind.
Those same posters, with an inability to process information, don't seem to question why it was that as soon as Kap was benched the oline was changed out and the offensive scheme switched massively to roll outs and play action - because it had been demonstrated that the Oline could not form a pocket - and never question why the scheme was changed so much for Gabbert, who is not a pocket passer, and why he was not tasked with standing behind that same oline for the majority of his pass plays.
If you doubt the accuracy of my argument, how did Tom Brady look in the AFCCG when his line could not stop the Denver pass rush.... Brady is a great QB, he has a fast release and he's battle tested and experienced, but he looked average to poor behind an OLine that struggled.
The argument has always been that Kap needed time and the right situation to develop, something the Panthers gave to Newton and have been rewarded for.
Couldn't agree more with just about all of that.
I'm not going to try and sell anyone that Kape WILL come back and be the great QB we all hoped he would be in 2012-2013, but I am certainly not ready to give up on the guy. There were ALOT of factors that go into the way he's played and he is responsible for MANY of them, but certainly not all.
Kaep was his best when they weren't messing with him. He was best when he was simply playing and not trying to be something he wasn't. I think the one thing we HAVE learned in this process is that he will never be a pure pocket passer...and that's OK.
"Mobile" zone-read QBs have now represented the NFC in the Super Bowl in 4 consecutive years (Kap, WIlson, Wilson, Newton). The AFC QBs have been named Brady, Manning...and Flacco (sigh). Anyone who says it doesn't work or that you need a pure pocket passer to win isn't paying attention.
This isn't just a "Chip likes mobile QBs so we need to give Kap a chance" argument. This is a "zone-read mobile QBs have been shown to be able to win in big games and we should give the one we have a shot with an OC who has a clue" argument.
Everyone in the media makes a big deal out of April 1st. I think it's a non-issue. I don't see them releasing him. Why? They could be as much as 60 mil under that WITH him on the roster. There is a salary cap and and a salary floor which means they HAVE to spend a ton of money in Free Agency this year. It might even be hard to get some guys simply because of the rep of Chip Kelly. IE, they may NEED Kaps contract in order to meet the salary floor.
Even if thats not the case and they are able to sign a number of guys to contracts and reach that floor, there is no big push for them to let Kap go for nothing when he is reasonable priced by QB standards and they can give him a shot with Chip and see what happens.
If they want to trade him, April 1st isn't a problem. They can still trade him because his contract will be guaranteed by whomever picks up the contract or they can trade him and the other team will renegotiate his deal with him. Either way, April 1st has nothing to do with any trade.
I have no idea if Chip can turn Kap around, but IMO its worth a shot and they have little issue with the contract to make it happen.
