Aldon Smith, The Next Great Casualty

The 49ers are shooting themselves in the foot once again, and Trent Baalke is the man holding the gun. What he has done with Aldon Smith's contract is an atrocity, and will no doubt have Aldon wearing another teams jersey in 2016. Can we really hope for Aldon to resign with the 49ers after experiencing first-hand the front office's my way or the highway attitude? Why would Aldon resign with the 49ers, who are likely to punish him very harshly if he messes up off the field, when he can get a fresh start and more money with another team? Trent Baalke has failed in investing in Aldon while his stock is low, the last 6 months was the 49ers best shot at locking in the most effective edge rusher in the NFL for the next 5 years! We missed it... our one opportunity. Instead we told Aldon we didnt really care about him enough and said he would have to prove it to us! how crazy is that? There is only one Aldon and there is 32 teams, he doesnt have to prove jack $h!t to us. He's already proved he's one of the best and every other team in the league would be licking their lips at the opportunity to sign him for the price we could have this past season. There are three ways this plays out. (1) Aldon has another off the field issue and gets cut by the 49ers as his contract states, he then becomes one of the biggest free agents of the 2016 offseason.(3 years $45 million) (2) Aldon has a mediocre season, Trent Baalke offers him another s**te deal with alot of stipulations involving off the field issues and performance bonuses(5 years $65 million), Aldon Smith chooses to sign with one of the other 31 teams who offer him a top free agent contract based on past performance with alot of guaranteed $ and no off the field stipulations(4 years $60 million). (3) Aldon has a great 10+ sack season, Becomes The highest paid OLB of All time in free agency racking up a 4 year $75 million contract , Trent Baalke looks like an idiot for not signing him to a 5 year $60 mil contract in 2015. Baalke has put himself in the position to have no power over the details of Aldon's contract. Aldon and his agent will have alot more chips at the table come the 2016 offseason. Baalke can't be that stupid though, he has to know this as well, which is why I have determined that the 49ers most likely have no interest in resigning Aldon and that the 49ers will be seeking some more pass rushers in this draft. Still a very terrible way to go about the whole situation. The orginization has no sense of retaining value in these situations. If we really do have no plans in resigning Aldon then just balls up and F*(K!n@ trade the guy! We are so weak, we tell these players they are bad with a slap on the back of the hand and then we ride their contracts out to the fullest. If you dont agree with a guy's off the field mentality then trade him or quit your b!tch!ng. The 49ers constantly ride this middle line where we dont agree with anything our players do but still pay them and use them to the fullest extent. What a good GM does in this situation- 1. Trades Aldon after off the Field issues in 2014. or 2. Resigns Aldon for dirt cheap early 2015 after the media quiets down. What Baalke/York Does - 1. talk s**t about how Aldon has mental health issues such as addiction. and 2. treat a player with mental health issues like sh!t by telling him he needs to fix it- publicly ridiculing him over it in front of the media. and 3. resign that player to a we dont give a F about you 1 year deal. and 4. lose out on getting any long term value from a 1st round draft pick and possibly best pass rusher of all time.

Are you saying that with the same confidence we had when we all denied the Harbaugh to Cleveland trade rumors?

he has not been in trouble so far this off season. with him that is a great sign. it is nice NOT to be talking about aldon in trouble with his pocketknife and ck terrorizing people with his dolphins hat on here in the off season

If we keep treating the guy like a child over isues that have nothing to do with the NFL, another team will snatch him up with no problems, he didn't beat his wife or take an illegal narcotics. he got some DUI's and had a stupid confrontation at an airport which ended with no legal problems, the 49ers have no right to judge him of something he was found innocent, just like Ray McDonald.

He has already proved he is the best pass rusher in the league and he doesn't beat his wife, which is all he has to prove to get a good contract.

Sure that is true, but it doesn't mean you re-up him before he plays a snap this year. They could still do a mid season extension. The giant vitriol post of doom up there seems a little unwarranted considering how the last two years have gone. He isn't suddenly a model citizen because he has managed a whole 6 months without having to be taken downtown.

yes that does mean you re-up him before this year. It is not just Aldon and the 49ers in this game. It is the 49ers vs every other team and aldon. It is very important that we resign him while we still have the power to do so.

Baalke cant play every decision by the numbers. If so we could have a Computer doing his job (which damn well might be what is going on). Sometimes a GM has to be Human and take Risks.

Statistically it does not make any sense to play by the numbers every time. If the rest of the 32 teams are taking risks and we arent, then some of those teams are going to have success in those risks and therefore have more success then us. The teams that get to the superbowl take risks... i.e. Harbaugh's decision to start Kaepernick. Patriots decision to sign Revis. Broncos Decison to sign Manning.

please do not misunderstand me,,, i am on your side here! i was just trying to be positive in regards to lack of news this off season with our players as compared to previous years!

I agree 100% Jax49er. The way we are going about handling one of the games premier pass rushers is down right stupid. I said all last year that when he came back we needed to re-sign him when the "stock was low". Luckily for our negotiating tactics he didn't play great, so the the "stock" is still pretty low. If we go into the season with no new deal for Aldon and he puts up a 15+ sack season, which if he's healthy he probably will, he's going to cost us too much money to re-sign. Baalke really is f**king this whole situation up if he doesn't have a new deal in place for Aldon before the season starts.

Perhaps you are forgetting the fact that he was so drunk in his car that he was found crashed up against a tree with his foot still on the accelerator and completely passed out.

Perhaps you are forgetting that he fired several shots at his home to disperse a crowd.

Perhaps you are forgetting that he was suspended for 9 games last year for owning illegal firearms.

Perhaps you are forgetting that the 49ers picked up his 9 MILLION dollar team option AFTER all of those incidents and the rework of his contract doesn't take a dime of that money away if he keeps his nose clean.

Aldon can be a great player...but painting this as the FRANCHISE messed up in this regard is ludicrous.

Last time I checked, it doesn't matter which team he plays for. If he screws up, it will be the NFL that punishes him regardless of which team is paying him. That's why this entire thread subject is misguided, hysterical and premature.

Ya...so you think Niners should resign him cheap? You do of course realize he has an Agent who would advise him NOT to do that right? Niners don't just get to sign guys whenever they want to contract that benefit them. The player has some say too.
