Honestly I think he's a little better than Coleman, he was a 3yr starter for the Bills.

When they had some of the worst OLs in football.

The 49ers kicked the tires on him before during the epic Jimsula era.

That was a few years ago now...guys do develop.

No, Phoenix said the past is the only indicator.

Mills is bad at run blocking and outside the top 100 OT at pass blocking. Struggles with speed rushers. Probably still better than Pope. His QBs have been a rookie and Tyrod Taylor so not exactly quick decision makers.

He's perfect for our standards. LOL

It's a back up...no exactly sure what people expect here.

It's clearly the worst in the league. I'd love to hear an argument for who has worse depth than Brunskill, Skule and Garland.

...fans still assuming Richburg is ready to go. Damn, that dude has cost us so much, literally and figuratively.

A backup just days from the season. Just noting he fits right in with the kinds of transactions we make for depth. Loooooooong list of these guys.

Off hand, I would say the Bills, Bucks, Cards and Dolphins have it much worse just to name a few.

He's a backup tackle with 82 starts...backup is the key word here.

Also I thought PFF stats

Meh. Pretty much any team that loses their center or left tackle is in trouble. I make an exception for the Patriots since they have one of the top OL coaches of all time.

Most teams have to compromise on a couple OL starters let alone having sufficient depth to withstand the loss of a quality starter.

Highest paid OL in football, ranked 28th in pass blocking. Maybe they haven't invested enough in their OL? Shame on them.

Well then the coaching must suck in Dallas.

That may be our problem since we have such a good O-line to, our coaching is also sub par.
If the talents there for us and Dallas, then what other problem can it be, it's either coaching or talent (or scheme, but our players are hand picked for our scheme)and you guys are saying our talents here.

Ya'll were just crying about not picking up a waiver pick on Saturday lol. This is the same damn thing.

You opinion on this is almost comical at this point, you complain we do nothing, you complain when we do something, you complain and complain and offer zero in terms of what you would have done better. You keep the negativity going in this thread almost singlehandedly just to prop up old arguments and move goal posts constantly. Not much to offer you at this point because nothing will matter, nothing that was realistic and could actually have been done would have made you content...it is abundantly clear.

The Chargers have some guys who might very well be worse as starters. People get myopic in here too much. The state of OL play in the NFL in general is garbage. Too few good linemen for far too many teams.

At this 23rd hour, I have zero issues with it. Any body is better than nothing. I didn't think Kyle would go with only 8 OL anyhow. Always keeps 10. Might add/elevate another too.

Interesting, hope it pays off

Thought I could get the tweet visible, oh well

Says Pope had offers from 4 other teams and ultimately chose the 49ers

He saw Brunskill, Garland and Skule and said, "That's my team! That one."

Good move.

A young and developing Joe Staley. if Benton has 50% the ability of Alex Gibbs, Pope has a shot at McGlinchy's spot in a year or two if or when Staley retires.

LOL. Yeah, it's easy to make those Staley to Pope connections. Haha

Sure, why not. We're fans. We can opine on *everything.*

Having said that, clearly ShanaLynch is still concerned with the OLine, otherwise why bring in another OLineman for a tryout?

Having said that, this line has the bodies and the talent that fits the scheme, and the scheme fits the talent. Unlike Garnett and Trent Brown who were athletic enough to barely make Kyle's plays work. Pope, Brunskill, Garland and Skule are scheme fit athletes. I think that's something to point out, because while the talent may be viewed as below par, the scheme will help the talent to make something better than if this particular talent was in a bad scheme fit like (for example) Gap and Man blocking. I think that's a step up from trying to shoehorn a square peg (brown and Garnet) into a round hole (the outside ZBS). Now the square peg is fitting into a square hole, and so it's - in a sense - it should be easier for Pope, Brunskill, Garland, and Skule to get better vs Trent Brown and Garnett (for example) in Kyle's system. HOpe that makes a bit of sense.

Just the opposite. I was the one saying we wouldn't preparing hopeful fans for it. Ha.
