Look at those PFF grades for Mike Purcell! Wow. Where has he been?

Yeah, Purcell was balling. He missed a tackle in the backfield early, but after that he was lights out. Was knifing through the Texans o-line the entire time. Showed up big on that epic goalline stand too. I like the way he played. He and Ian Williams are very quick for 3-4 NTs.

It looks like they can safely move Dorsey to tackle full-time because Purcell is just fine backing up Williams. We'll have to see more, but he sure looks like the real thing this year. What happened? It must be coaching and conditioning because i don't think he's ever looked even close to how he looked Saturday.

You're right, never seen him play that well before. Last pre-season I recall seeing him getting pushed around consistently. Much better this game. He's been in the system a few years. Since Jimmy T has been here almost every d-lineman has developed into a good player.. Not surprised to see a guy like Purcell develop over time.

Agree
I think we'll have a better idea after Purcell plays the rest of the preseason games and faces different competion.
Having him step up speaks volumes of our DLine coaching.

Looney seemed to do well at center, but yeah. Let's go, Kilgore. Get back in there!

I'm still trying to get a feel for their ratings system, especially the O-line. How did Staley grade so negatively on just 2 run blocking snaps? Hardly enough playing time to grade him out as one of the worst performers in the game, and I didn't see anything that egregious when watching.
On the first play of the game - Hyde run (Vance hold) - Staley whiffed his block. Remember Hyde straight arming some DE? That was the DE that Staley allowed to go by. Still, no idea how that gets him a -1.5 if there was only one other run play.

Looney is the kicking boy around here b/c of the 2012 draft but he's a good player and the more he is able to focus on just one position, the better he's getting. I like him at center right now. Certainly stronger than Kilgore.

Looney and Kilgore are both 6'3" and Looney is just listed at 7 lbs heavier. Are you sure Looney is that much stronger than Kilgore?

Okay thanks. That was my big issue. I understand he may have missed a block, but -1.5 after 2 plays?? They're grading him like that play decided the game.

I'm with you. I don't get it either. He should be graded negatively, sure, but -1.5? Perhaps there's a ratio being considered. As in, out of two snaps, he butchered one play, which is 50% of his snaps. Hence the harsh grade.

Maybe it's something like that. So if Staley butchers 1 out of 2 snaps, 50%, he gets graded worse than someone who butchered 20 out of 60 snaps, or 33%. Doesn't make much sense to me, but maybe that's how it works.
It would be more accurate if playing time and the impact of the play on the game would be considered, although that may be difficult to do.

When he was playing Kilgore graded out well. When Looney grades better he can take the job. I still trust Kilgore with line calls more than anybody.

They are so skewed for power blocking that Iupati could be a top ten OG wile being a below average pass blocker. Not really helpful! But it is a way of starting an analysis...with/in context. I suppose it all averages out through the season but in a small sample size like this game it looks so ridiculous!
The line played well and I didn't see that big a difference between OLmen in the first half. Martin did fine but is at the bottom of the rating while others played in the second half, against guys who will be cut, and they rated higher. Just part of analysis. Martin needs to get stronger but I think much of his problem is hesitancy as he matures. I believe the line down the road will have Martin and Thomas starting and they'll be there for a long time. The only things that might effect this is health or attitude and both seem to enjoy the game.
