Other then that play where Thompson should have stepped up in the pocket and got sacked, Trent Brown looked good.

Whatever happened with Evan Mathias? We have plenty of cap room, sign him.

the coaches like the progress our people have made and there is no need to do anything different at this point in time

Thought line did well. I remember last year where the second string guys couldn't block s**t.

The Niners have been a power running team since the late 90s, when they transitioned away from their traditional mobile OL and brought in Kevin Gogan, Ray Brown and Jeremy Newberry. They had such success with it, that I think the organization fell in love with the power running game. I venture to say, we've spent more draft capital on interior lineman than any other team during that time frame, spending a lot of 1st and 2nd round picks on interior lineman. But those draft picks didn't really pan out.
And for having such a "powerful" line, it sure seems like we were stuffed a lot when it really counted. I'd like to see a stat on our success on converting 3rd and short runs, but we seemed to have major problems in that area for years. Maybe because we were so predictable. Anyway, it's hard (and expensive), to try and get lineman that can consistantly over-power the opponent. And I think that's the biggest problem with power blocking.

Great point! Power guys tend to be the most expensive and are rated higher than "finesse" players (which is what Walsh's critics called his offense). Were A Davis and Iupati really worthy of top OL money? Staley is and was, as he can play either scheme, so he's the only lineman I'd be willing to pay. There are certain guys who can play with versatility who also deserve good money, like Cross in the 80s...and I'm hoping Martin, Kilgore, Thomas and perhaps even Looney are in this category...not top money but good cap friendly money.

They exceeded my expectations...by a lot! Not sure it matter since Watt didn't play and Houston had some other guys out, but it was a good beginning. I wonder if the coaches decided to preserve CK until they see how well the line plays? No sense having a TC hero, who won't make it past the first cut, earn a name for himself by injuring a QB.

M Martin continues to get pushed around and spun around. Very concerned about this awful looking dude as a player. We shoulda took Gabe Jackson who is bigger and BETTER and available.

Ugh, would be another in a long line of failed guards we took with high picks Baas, Rachel, Smiley. (Iupati had a few good years but was a big liability in pass protection).
And we've had more success with undrafted free agents and lower round picks. Isn't Daniel Kilgore supposed to return soon?
I hope this move to zone blocking means we'll be wasting less day 1 picks on guards that suck.

Good posts guys!
i remember how Walsh's offense was pooh-poohed by the establishment coaches at the time.
Winning cures a lot of complaints.
i also remember how, for years, people in the Zone criticized the Staley pick and wanted that guy Egnoh [sp].
For the 1st game we did fine. Not really good and not bad. DEFINITELY room for improvement.
Looking forward to game 2.

Rewatched the first half, before the wheels totally fell off the bus, and I'd advise both of you to do the same. Martin played very well and I didn't see his guy make one tackle. He followed his block on Hayne's long run and knocked him down so he couldn't pursue. He kept his guy walled off from the QB both from the RG and the OC positions.
Not sure why it's open season on Martin but for a 21 year old the guy's doing well.
Edit: would appreciate either of you referencing a specific play (maybe by time) so I could see him totally blow a block.
