Pears has been a Tackle his entire career. Last year was the first time he played guard. He might suck, but to say he's not a tackle is incorrect.

Also ask yourself why nobody has signed Mathis yet. He has options, but he's 34 and won't fit into anyone's long-term plans. He'll improve the line this year, but what happens next year? He'll probably be gone and you still have the same old question mark on the line. At a certain point, it's better to develop a younger player at the position.

Thank you Sofa I was about to respond to this but I knew someone would see the egregious error in that post.

How in the world is Pears "not a tackle in your opinion" when that's all he's played IS tackle? I guess you followed him through HS and college at some time when he's played OG?

It's called early onset opinion creation! Can be very dangerous if allowed to go unchecked!
Calling it now these fools give up 5+ sacks tomorrow

So Pears has been in the NFL since 2005 or 2006 and has BLOWN everywhere he's been is all the sudden gonna be a FIND at age 33 just because he's a 49ers? Haha yeah right stop the homerism. And to also think M Martin wasn't a disaster last year is the epitomy of HOMERISM Goggles.

We signed Pears for dirt cheap. He was supposed to be a backup, but then AD retired and threw everything off. Nobody is saying the dude is going to be awesome. All that's ever been said is that he fits best as a tackle in a ZBS. The HATERS took that simple fact and ran with it like we think he's the second coming of Anthony Munoz. Stop being so dense.

The reason they brought Pears in is because he graded really well two seasons ago (under Marrone I believe) when Buffalo ran a ZBS. Last season they were a power scheme and that's not his forte.

Some contradictory reports as to whether the Bills ran zone or power last year under Marrone. They had a heavy line which seemed to be better suited for power, but some people said they ran zone.

Regardless, the last time Pears played well was at Tackle, in a ZBS, under Chan Gailey. He might completely suck this year, but apparently he's our best option, and at least he's in a system that suits his strengths.

Exactly! Also, he's a tackle and no longer a guard. the most difficult spot on the line in a ZBS is guard especially when teams like Seattle line their D tackle Bennett at the 3 technique.

Yup! I know he doesn't get much push in the run game, I just hope he can hold his own in pass pro.

Pretty much sums it up.
Watching the Rams tonight, I remembered that every team in our division went out of their way to beef up their defensive lines because of how good our Oline was since 2011. The run d and pass rush in our division has been stronger than any other. Unless we totally luck out with Thomas and a couple others, I think we are screwd and not just in the passing game.

I know it's not popular around here, but I just do see how we over come this year. If Davis was here, maybe, but with three new starters ( all of whom have struggled in camp), no way.

Only struggled the first week

Understood, but this division is for real and they will be playing against some serious talent. Everyone on here expecting guys like joe looney to some how become this legit starter or stud player are fooling themselves. Same with Pears. Our only real hope is our rookies and they have at least a one year learning curve.

P.s. The reports out of camp have not been positive on guys like Martin ( must be the name). Not only has he not been impressive even in flashes, he's losing a lot of one on one strength battles and getting sat on his keester. Compare that to a guy like AA, that is at least showing flashes of dominance.
