Sucks that Cooper won't be ready until training camp. I'm hoping Cooper can live up to his draft position in this offense.

Do you know If any of the teams cooper has been with ran a similar scheme?

Talking about just run schemes, I believe ARI ran lots of power concepts with Bruce Arians. Hue Jackson in CLE also runs lots of power concepts. DAL runs a mix of everything and I think I read somewhere that DAL is where Cooper was considered competent. Maybe it's because DAL ran more zone stuff than ARI/CLE, or maybe it's just because he played next to better players.

Found an interesting article on Jonathan Cooper. I think as everyone said previously in other threads, he's a good fit for Kyle's offense. I think once he recovers from his injury, his athleticism is going to be a plus in this offense, and his supposed lack of strength will be minimized by scheme. I am really looking forward to seeing him play when he's healthy.

o what are the common themes?
Scouting reports equivocally state he is an elite athlete for his position, which also shows up on his plays. This is especially prevalent when he pulls and reaches to the second level, which makes him significantly more suited to Zone Blocking scheme than to Power Blocking scheme. His athleticism has also given him a plus first step out of his stance. Cardinals reportedly run ZBS (at least in 2015) so you may cross out "poor scheme fit" as the reason he busted there.
They also equivocally state his average ~ less than average physique and the lack of power can be concerning in both running game and passing game. Another negative consensus is that he seems to have an occasional "hiccups" in pass protections.

I don't buy that ARI, under Bruce Arians, ran mostly a zone blocking scheme. Bruce Arians ran a predominantly power/gap blocking when he was with ARI. Being that they are division rivals, I've watched the Cardinals over the past couple years including when Cooper was with them ('14-'15)

Yeah, we badly need one of these guys to reach their potential (Cooper or Garnett).

...or Tomlinson. Of course Cooper living up to his would be the best result as he was a highest pick out of the lot.

Exactly...sounds like he's got LG locked down but yeah, is he going to reach his full potential?

their potential, exactly, everyone was freaking out we didn't grab a guard in the first round...he'll we have three relatively low first round picks at guard! No guaranties in the draft! So, yeah let's hope two of these guys step up!
PFF offensive line rankings now.

14. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
2017 pass-blocking efficiency: 79.0

Best individual PBE: Daniel Kilgore, 97.1

The 49ers offensive line fielded the most-improved unit in football in 2017, as the team improved their pass-blocking efficiency from 71.7 in 2016 (29th of 32 teams) to 79.0 in 2017. One major reason for this was the outstanding play by veteran left tackle Joe Staley, who allowed just 24 pressures all season and ended the year with a PBE of 96.7, ranking 10th among tackles. Going into the 2018 season, the 49ers will certainly hope that the addition of rookie tackle Mike McGlinchey will help bolster the line, as McGlinchey allowed just 16 pressures on 411 pass-block snaps throughout his final season at Notre Dame.
to me the o-line is the key to this season, more important than edge rush issues, db or lb development, wr or te issues, or qb and rb play. those are all important--but it will be the o-line play that determines the success of everything else, imho.

I think it all starts with their ability to cohesively execute the running game--that outside zone scheme. It helps alot that we now have a stable of very fast, explosive running backs--but it will still come down to execution of the ZBS by the o-line. imho. and nothing can substitute for experience, reps together in running shanny's system.

Staley, Tomlinson, Magnuson and Person all have some experience in the system. It will be interesting to see how quickly MM, Cooper, Richburg and Garnett pick it up.. Should be greatly improved over last year.

I'm totally with you OND. This team will go as the OL and pass rush goes.

Hell yeah. Add Richburg and Cooper who are upgrades over Kilgore/Fusco...2nd year of the system. Well lose some pass pro with Mcglinchey instead of brown, but we'll get better in the screen passing game and improve in the run game as well most definitely.

Also having Jimmy for a full season will help with pass pro by being able to get rid of the ball faster and moving better in the pocket compared to what we had last year with hoyer and CJ holding onto the ball for too long at times, etc. Can't wait for the play action to go into full force with having leads allowing more of a balanced and mysterious attack.
