Given the abuse Andrew Luck has had to endure I don't want Mike Person anywhere close protecting Jimmy G., not even as a backup, or a backup to the backup.

He didn't block for Luck last season

Well, I stand corrected. But I still don't think we should be sniffing around Indy's O-line trash-heap.

Mike Person is a solid reserve player. He wasn't even there when Luck was getting pummeled lol. His season as a starter came with Atlanta at C in 2015. They started out 6-1 before collapsing in the second half of the season to go 8-8. Person was with the Colts as a backup last year but entered in for injury and overall played average. 70.5 PFF grade (so around the same level as Tomlinson/Cooper).

He isn't starting

Agreed but sometimes OL don't hit that light switch until after season 5 or 6. I forget the former 49er who was like a 6th/7th round OG, didn't make the team and was cut but then became an all-pro for Dallas.

Sometimes it's the system too.

Arizona took Jonathan Cooper 7th overall and tried to make him a power guard. But he isn't. He is one of the most athletic guards in the league and will thrive in our zone scheme.

That's what was said about Beadles when he came here.

So there was supposedly a big talent dropoff where the 49ers would had to have selected a guard with the Pettis pick, or draft a day 3 guard who would have very little expectations of contributing in 2018.

Yep. And with the 4 guys we have at guard there was no way we were spending a 2nd round pick on a guard to be 4th or 5th on the depth chart

still can't believe they cut Beadles

Why? Beadles was being paid as one of the top 32 guards in the league. He was making starter money to be a depth player. Now you get Person for a fraction of that cost. Person is familiar with Kyle's scheme and as of the last few years has been every bit of an equal player to Beadles. Probably even better imo.

Lol. Good stuff
Lynch signed Person because of his experience and versatility...he can literally play any of the OL positions. Theoretically, so could Beadles, but he wasn't so hot at most of 'em. Person's a lunch pail kind of guy...hard worker not great, but definitely serviceable as a b/u. It's only a 1-yr contract, so am sure Coach likes having the veteran insurance. And yes, he was originally drafted by the Niners in 2011.

Yep. Totally agree.

I know this was said about Beadles, but hey sometimes it just doesn't work out and you have move forward. What I love about this off-season already is that we're just not standing pat. We know OL is critical to the success of the team. If you can't get the EDGE rusher on defense you want, there are other ways of beating great offenses - keeping them off the field with a balanced attack and a good OL.

KS and JL don't have a singular approach to personnel or winning. We will be competitive next season, even as a work-in-progress.

Good to read some positive comments about Cooper! Too many over reactions against the guy before we know what he can do in Shanahan's system. Perhaps he will be a backup, but they evidently liked him more than Fusco or Beadles...so...alls right with the world!
You down wit OPP?

Lynch signing Baalke guys? What has this world come to?
Person just seems to me like an experienced version of Magnuson.
