To put together what Thl and I said - there were no guards selected from #38 ->166.......

Correction on my previous post, there were 4 guards selected after the 4th. with 2 in the 6th and one in the 7th.

Started 14 games at center for Shanahan in ATL in 2015 and 4 games for Indy last year and in his first game vs Jak PFF gave him an 88 rating and he didn't allow a hurry or pressure vs that line.

LT- Joe Staley / Darrell Williams
LG- Laken Tomlinson / Erik Magnusen
C- Weston Richburg / Mike Person
RG- Jonathan Cooper / Josh Garnett
RT- Mike McGlinchey / Garry Gilliam

This line is really shaping up. We have some nice depth now and a good mix of young guys and veteran's.

Williams, Magnusen, Person, Gilliam, or Coleman is going to have to win more than one backup job. Teams rarely keep 10.

Having said that, I'm all for giving Jimmy more weapons and protecting him. If their master plan is to continue to rebuild vs competing for the championship, I can understand how they drafted. I just think that they would be closer to championship level defense and a championship if they drafted defense again this year. I just don't like an unbalanced team that is all offense and can't stop anybody. I went through that in 1980 and it was an agonizing season.

How-to win football games:

Offense: Run the ball and convert 3rd downs.

Defense: Stop the run and hold teams on 3rd down.

Shanahan is building the offense he needs and McGlinchy will be a big part of improving our run game. Pettis will be huge in converting 3rd downs.

Our team was top 10? in rushing D after a historically bad season. And we will need some young guys to step up on D and progress even further. I'm not worried about our D one bit. I think we will be playing with a lead quite often which will help things as well.

6-10 in year one and 13-3 in year 2. I'm talking about Walsh's 2nd and 3rd years. If we have that edge rusher like Fred, I'm certain that we'd have a season comparable to Walsh's 3rd season. We still can, but we need that edge rusher. Everybody thinks we're still in rebuild mode and I think that was true before the draft, but not after. I think Kyle is good enough to have a top 10 offense this year with his current draft class, but it's just missing that edge rusher. I was hoping he would get it from the draft, but now it looks like it will have to be who we got in free agency. Without that edge rusher, I think we can get into the playoffs but not much further.

So there was supposedly a big talent dropoff where the 49ers would had to have selected a guard with the Pettis pick, or draft a day 3 guard who would have very little expectations of contributing in 2018.

Yep. And with the 4 guys we have at guard there was no way we were spending a 2nd round pick on a guard to be 4th or 5th on the depth chart

still can't believe they cut Beadles

Same here, I thought they were going for edge rusher or guard at Kentavius' draft spot, they took neither!

you can not tell me the team could not have found any sort of offensive lineman in the 4th but no. the brick by brick method tells us we needed an acl guy who MAY help next year. our guards have not lived up to their drafting anywhere they have played but yet we hope they will turn it around for us.

If they thought there wasn't a guard who would help any year is that a better choice because it would have filled a perceived need? If the guy wasn't an upgrade of even a backup player and they drafted an ACL guy who could start in 2019 or be a significant role player in 2019 that's worse?

None of us know how they graded any of those guards. Drafting a guy you think has a 50/50 chance of contributing is better than a 10% chance of them even making the team in a place of "need". That's why you don't draft for need and end up screwed if you do.

I'll tell you what. If our O-line is absolute garbage next year and in 2 years we see 1, 2, or 3 guards taken on the 3rd day of this draft starting and being quality players on other teams, I'll say you were right.

Pretty much this!

Not sure why the release of Beadles isn't proof that the team is working on OG issues. He was a friend of Staley's, was versatile, and filled a spot. Now he's being replaced by someone the team likes more. The only OG that could be assured of starting, perhaps, was Nelson, drafted ahead of the niners first round pick.

Problem is there were no edge rushers worthy or taking and RT was a much bigger need than edge.

Personally I think Marsh is going to surprise people this year.

i do not know the names but at three or four you can not tell me there was not a guard out there who would have helped us more than an acl defensive lineman. when jimmy is laying on his back after cooper misses a block i will remind you he was decorated in college

There actually wasn't lol. I mean if there was a OG that is better than Cooper/Tomlinson/Garnett available at the bottom of the 4th can you please tell me who?

Also go look at shanahan's past OGs tell me how many early draft picks were spent on them? Who were all the "big names" ? I'll wait...
Decent back up

Agreed. We probably keep 8

Darrell Williams - Practice squad
Erik Magnusen - Practice squad

The 3 guards battling it out will be interesting. Maybe the odd guy out will not make the team and we choose to keep Magnusen on the 53 but I doubt it. I think we keep all 3.

Atl traded a 6th for Andy Levitre, Cleveland used 2.35 on Joel Bitonio and Washington used 3.78 on Spencer Long but none of those teams had 3 former 1st round picks competing for 2 spots.
isnt Pearson an old 49er? i swear we signed him as UDFA right?

Yes he was a late draft pick some time ago and has been around. Don't expect too much.

Quality backup. What's not to like?

PFF has him with 70.5 rating while Daniel Kilgore, our former starter was a 51.

Sometimes it's the system too.

Arizona took Jonathan Cooper 7th overall and tried to make him a power guard. But he isn't. He is one of the most athletic guards in the league and will thrive in our zone scheme.
