they should have brought in someone to compete and push these underachievers. someone who at least has a good college football resume. these three have been below average all their lives
You act as if above average guards who would fit our scheme grow on trees or are sitting out there with no one else wanting them...lol....

I hope Lynch reads this so he can finally say, "OHHHHHH, That's what I should've done this off-season....WOW....I was way off. Why didn't I hear this sooner?!?"

LT- Joe Staley / Darrell Williams
LG- Laken Tomlinson / Erik Magnusen
C- Weston Richburg / Mike Person
RG- Jonathan Cooper / Josh Garnett
RT- Mike McGlinchey / Garry Gilliam

This line is really shaping up. We have some nice depth now and a good mix of young guys and veteran's.
you know your line stuff. i am glad to hear about the new guy. lord knows we needed something here to come in and compete

How would drafting a guard fix the unproven problem at guard?
Bam! No answer for that one. I was hoping for a guard prospect on day 2 to make a push for snaps in 2019 - maybe even 2018 if Garnett/Cooper fall on their faces. There were three guards chosen at the top of round 2. I knew then that the 49ers would not select a guard, if they were even considering one at all.

Same here, I thought they were going for edge rusher or guard at Kentavius' draft spot, they took neither!

I was hoping Shanahan and Lynch knew what they were doing! And we won't know for at least a year or two. Some of my concerns were met in the draft, others by UDFA, and still more with free agents. But...won't know for reals until they play actual games. Preseason still won't answer them...just actual wins and losses. But when were you last so excited for the season to begin? Chip Kelly was an odd but interesting hire. It seemed that they would have to really redo the roster or he would fail. Baalke refused to make those changes, perhaps Chip agreed to work with those players without major changes?

I see an transition to speed, character (Foster being an exception), and intelligence. All good as far as I'm concerned.

I think if they took either Landry or Davenport and downgraded the offensive picks, I think I'd have felt a lot more comfortable with that kind of draft. Having said that, I'm all for giving Jimmy more weapons and protecting him. If their master plan is to continue to rebuild vs competing for the championship, I can understand how they drafted. I just think that they would be closer to championship level defense and a championship if they drafted defense again this year. I just don't like an unbalanced team that is all offense and can't stop anybody. I went through that in 1980 and it was an agonizing season.

False again. They were 1st round picks for being way above average in college.
in the nfl they have been well below average. i would have been very happy if lynch had the balls and taken a chance on a kid who was good in college to come in and push these guys but no. lets play it safe and hope it works out cuz lynch said they are sexy
You are allo over the place. Seems like you are upset because they didn't do what you wanted. lol. I side with the team over the ideas you have presented. Some don't even make sense and your points in this thread contradict eachother.

You do realize that Garnett won the Outland Trophy and Cooper was one of the most decorated linemen in college right??

Again, you say we should have brought someone in but don't mention who? There wasn't one guard available not named Isaiah Wynn or Quenton Nelson who would start or even push the 3 guys we have. And we weren't using a 1st on a guard.

well he did take my advice come out and discuss foster before the draft and he did take my advice and sign what steve young says is a decent versatile man for the line. so maybe there is some hope for him

Because history shows that guards with a history of success in college are can't miss prospects so how you evaluate and grade those lineman doesn't count....

Oh wait.....
CC doesnt' like the 3 young guys we have who had a history of success in college so were drafted in the 1st round and wants a guard with a history of success in college no matter how the personnel department had them graded to be better than the aforementioned guards.....

i do not know the names but at three or four you can not tell me there was not a guard out there who would have helped us more than an acl defensive lineman. when jimmy is laying on his back after cooper misses a block i will remind you he was decorated in college

How-to win football games:

Offense: Run the ball and convert 3rd downs.

Defense: Stop the run and hold teams on 3rd down.

Shanahan is building the offense he needs and McGlinchy will be a big part of improving our run game. Pettis will be huge in converting 3rd downs.

Our team was top 10? in rushing D after a historically bad season. And we will need some young guys to step up on D and progress even further. I'm not worried about our D one bit. I think we will be playing with a lead quite often which will help things as well.

You think a 4th round rookie would push the guys we have?? No chance man.

We are set on the line even before we signed Person. We have Tomlinson, Cooper, Garnett and Magnusen at guard. One or two of them likely won't be active game days so a 4th round rookie would be 5th on the depth chart.

We can only carry a certain amount of linemen on the 53 man.

If the guard in round 3 or 4 wasn't better than the 3 guys they have, they would have had to cut the guy and waste the pick in that round. They can only keep so many OL players.

I tend to agree with that, up to a point. While I don't like the Kentavius pick, the rest of the draft was long term positioning. I like the RT, Wr, and LB picks as well as the later DB picks.

i love our linebacker and liked all the d backs. i thought we did not have to trade up for the wide out but i like him very much.. the rookie tackle is what it is and i expect him to start and play well right away. the thought of him or staley getting hurt or staley losing it or the kid not being ready is troubling to ponder

I see it this way, as long as Kyle is the coach, he could probably turn garbage OLinemen into productive players. He did that last year, but I think it took a toll on him. I think it frustrated him to not be able to run his full offense when he had a franchise level QB playing for him. I think the draft went that way because he can see his offense becoming the number one offense in the NFL again. I just hope he balances that out next year with defense. Too late to do it now unless they spend next year's draft capital this year for an edge rusher.

There were 4 guards drafted in the top half of the 2nd round. The next guard prospect chosen was in round 5. So there was supposedly a big talent dropoff where the 49ers would had to have selected a guard with the Pettis pick, or draft a day 3 guard who would have very little expectations of contributing in 2018.

LOL at acting like there was some real talent left at guard...lol

There were 3 guards drafted after the 4th round. Think about this, this is how poor the NFL thought of the guards left that were available:
2 of those guards were selected in the 7th round
The Chiefs - who have a need at G selected a DT to transition to guard instead of any of those 3 left.
The Seahawks who had the worst OL in the league last year drafted a punter instead of any of those guards.....an F'n Punter, man!!!!

So, slow down on all this, "you can't tell me there wasn't a guard better than an ACL pick DE".

Yes, actually, all of the NFL front offices say there wasn't a better option. But, what would they know compared to you?

Yep. And with the 4 guys we have at guard there was no way we were spending a 2nd round pick on a guard to be 4th or 5th on the depth chart
