We did quite Ok with that line and Zane Beadles starting at RT for the final 4 games.

Yeah but I think we are wanting to get past okay and want to compete for the playoffs and ultimately the Super Bowl. I do agree though, the O-line played much better down the stretch, Obviously Jimmy G helped make that group look better with his quick release and just everything all-around. Laken Tomlinson was one guy I thought really got better as the season went on and the last month he looked like a solid NFL starting offensive guard.

You should have told Stanford! They had Garnett at LG! Dumb school?

I think the OL still has A LOT of work ahead of it and we can't look at today's projected starters as anything near a finished product. Every projected starter on this line except for Staley and Tomlinson is returning from some sort of injury.

Richburg, Brown, Cooper, Garnett, Gilliam are all either returning from injury or had some sort of off-season procedure. Beadles and Magnusson are depth players. I'm sure this hasn't gone unnoticed and OL, particularly interior OL will be addressed in the draft. The Cooper signing again means we aren't forced to reach for a player, that is (as NC said) this essentially is last year's line with a couple of tweak improvements. Cooper replaces Fusco. Richburg replaces Kilgore. Net positive on paper, but at the very least I imagine Richburg will play at least as good as a healthy Kilgore.

The key will be finding young talent who can come in and force Beadles off the team, because we're absolutely clear how bad he plays in this scheme. Additionally, we need those drafted players to push every guard at this point.

Players rise and fall every year. At this time last year, you wouldn't have believed me if I told you we were going to cut our best corner and trade out second best corner before mid-season and that our rook was going to seriously step up and be our best pure CB.

I think the key here will be for the guys to stay HEALTHY throughout mini-camp, camp and the preseason - so they can learn and develop as a unit - whoever the starting 5 will be.

Good post. I think Mangunson will replace Beadley as the key versatile back-up as he can play both guard spots, center and even tackle in a pinch like Beadles.

I still hope we draft a kid relatively early in the draft. I love Isiah Wynn and Will Hernandez if we trade down. I like Austin Corbett and Brian O'Neil late in the 2nd or early 3rd rd. Raignow from Arkansas and the kid from VA Tech I also really like in the 3rd or 4th rd.

Exactly. You'd be doing your team a major disservice if you stay pat with Tomlinson, Garnett and Copper vying for both G spots esp. in a deep and talented interior draft class.

Same:

Tackles:
Joe Staley - 33 and fought through nagging injuries over the past 3 years.
Gary Gilliam - backup at best
Pace Murphy - who?
Trenton Brown - labrum surgery, due a big contract, scheme-fit?
Darrell Williams Jr. - ?

Guards:
Jonathan Cooper - to date, first round bust
Laken Tomlinson - to date, first round bust
Zane Beadles - cutting him saves $3.5M
Joshua Garnett - to date, first round bust
Andrew Lauderdale - who?

Centers:
Weston Richburg - premier C potential
Erik Magnuson - coming off foot surgery

I'm not sure why anyone is feeling great about this line today or tomorrow.

This is exactly why I want a OT in the first round. We are far from set there too.

I'm not sure why anyone is feeling great about this line today or tomorrow.

Lake Tomlinson and Jonathan Cooper started all of last year and were solid players. They maybe weren't Superstars but they were solid.

Laken Tomlinson 70.7 (#32)
Jonathan Cooper 67.0 (#35)

To put in in perspective the starting guards in the Super Bowl were:

Stefen Wisniewski 74.8 (#26)
Brandon Brooks 88.3 (#4)

Joe Thuney 79.0 (#14)
Shaq Mason 81.1 (#10)

Atlanta Falcons guards:

Andy Levitre 78.0 (#17)
Wes Schweitzer 43.7 (#54.0)
This year they added:
Brandon Fusco 76.0 (#21) to replace Schweitzer.

Now I guarantee that if we had Jimmy Garappolo the entire year and Jonathan Cooper was in a zone scheme that suits him our guards rankings would be higher as well.

Teams don't need All Pro guards as long as they fit the scheme they are running.

If we feel there is a guard who fits our scheme who will be better than the guys we have we will make a move but the only guy that will be available and be an upgrade is Isaiah Wynn and I can't see us going guard in rounds 1 or 2 with our holes on D.
My hope for this year:

1: Garnett comes into camp after an off season of working on movement so he fits Shanahan's scheme. He's a smart guy with great potential.
2: Tomlinson does the same and is at least a better backup than Beadles.
3: Cooper fits like a glove and finally earns his first round selection.
4: Staley and Brown stay healthy.

If these players can be at least decent they will elevate the OL play above last year and give JG enough time to get the ball to his quick receivers. If Garcon is healthy, they will have a pretty decent receiving group...with or without adding in the draft. Garcon, Goodwin, and Kittle aren't top end guys but they may be very good in Shanahan's scheme with JG throwing them the ball.

Edit: I doubt they would have let Fusco leave if they didn't believe in their other OGs.

I'm just not that high on this Tackle class.

That's how Shanahan likes to build his O-line. He invests (dollars and/or draft capital) in Tackle and Center, then fills in with Guards who are athletic and can run. I expect the team to draft a Guard or two this year but doubt it'll be earlier than round 5.

Pretty much dead on but I think Tomlinson starts and Cooper and Garnett battle it out for the other starting OG spot

At this point I agree

Tomlinson has a year's experience in the KS offense that will be in his favor.
