it think we agree o line and safety/secondary are weak and they did almost nothing to upgrade it unless hopefully the 4th round guys pan out.

I think they did just enough to protect Brock. They signed Trent Williams, he's the equivalent of a first round OLine draft pick (in my opinion). Then they drafted some promising draftees with some athletic potential - a future Left Guard and a future Left Tackle. Then, of course, they kept Mac Jones, and red shirted Kurtis Rourke, so I guess in their minds they got the QB position covered. We will see.

I think the defensive backfield is designed to be schematically weak. To a certain extent that thinking will be ok for the regular season, but in the playoffs it's a different matter entirely. In the Superbowl, it's backfired on ShanaLynch twice already. I'm hoping Raheem Morris can knock some sense into Kyle and John this year about that intentionally designed weak DB squad.

I feel the same way about the o line tbh. Safety was horrible. This was a deep safety class and.....no safety. Same for center two years ago. 🤷‍♂?

I get they can coach up and scheme around but come playoff time talent shows up.

In ten-ish years of drafting, Kyle's found only one all-pro DB, to my knowledge in the draft. Walsh found multiple all-pros and a hall of famer.

You would think in a pass happy NFL league, Kyle would focus as much attention to the DB's as he does his WR's. But nope. That's a big peeve of mine regarding Kyle. A good Pass defense is composed of a pass rush *AND* pass coverage. This flawed defensive scheme always bites him in the Azz deep in the playoffs.

And if you can't draft it, then at least address it in FA (with viable, championship caliber starters)

They signed Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, and Patrick McMorris in free agency. I don't know what that says about ShanaLynch's concern for the DB's, but clearly they could have done more. In the draft, Epesians was a 4th round pick, and Marquis was a 5th. When they try -- they get guys like Upton Stout (3rd round pick), Renardo Green was 2nd round pick, they seem to have gotten some decent results. I'm hoping the guys like Marquis, Upton, and Renardo develop. Maybe with Raheem, these guys will take the jump to light speed and become all pros, we shall see. But for now, the DB squad is a weakness in my book.

Would spending the money put them over Seattle and LA? Would these 3 stunt the development of their younger players? Bosa's the only one with an injury issue. I like the idea of older accomplished players wanting that one chance to play in the playoffs. Money should be reasonable in those cases.

I give them credit for signing Trent Williams. (2 years for 50 million) He was a great signing. He was a great free agency acquisition. You got a hall of famer for 3rd round pick and a 5th round pick. If he takes care of his body and the 49ers make sure to limit his reps, he can easily play another two years. That's two first round draft picks saved by the Trent Williams signing.

I'm hoping a scenario plays out where (in a year or two) we can fleece another bottom feeder like we did Trent Willams from Washington. Candidates to fleece (for example) Las Vegas Raiders and Kolton Miller, Tampa Bay and Tristan Wirfs.

Just my opinion, but it's defense that let us down in both championships, not offense. Both times (i belive) in the 4th Qtr, 49ers led, and the 49er defense let the opposing team off the hook. Again just my opinion.

The secondary in particular.

Agree. Their philosophy of "great pass rush allows us to draft crap DB's" led to pass coverage breakdowns, in a sense, in both Superbowls.

I guess I missed a different Chris Jones literally eat our OL in both SBs

I belive we were ahead in both games in the fourth QTR is my point.

I don't think they're done at Safety, all they did was add a couple of Undrafted Rookies. I bet they're looking to either add one after June 1st or working on trading for one. There's still a little under three months till training camp, no way Stroman is all they add.

I think they'll wait till training camp and how the rookie DB's are doing and then re-evaluate whether or not they have to trade or get a free agent Safety/CB to bolster the unit. My hope is that ShanaLynch have hit on the DB class this draft cycle. We shall see.
They should change the thread titles for our new draft picks:

Kaelon Black: OL - Indiana
De'Zhaun Stribling: OL - Ol' Miss
