The Rams are at the top of the leaguein sacks with 15. They only got one last night against an imobile QB that was injured. I guess the line was doing a decent job.

And the sack was in OT!

This doesn't paint the whole picture as the Rams also had like 10? QB hits. Mac was constantly getting the ball out fast or checking down to compensate.

I would agree their pass protection has looked improved compared to past years, but it's still suspect and oddly it seems to be at the expense of run blocking which has been bad.

I still stand by Brendel being the killer. So often the middle is just obliterated. If we had an actual talented top of the line center everything would vastly improve.

I thought they did pretty good for the most part.

Ya.....other than getting Jones killed and a running game that is is subpar.
Selfless position never gets enough credit but my god this group is bad.

Forecasts were that the Rams front was going to feast last nigh. They had to settle for a stale hot dog.

I'm in agreement we need the middle of the OL to get better, however, the IOL is still learning to play together. For the amount of time they have had, together, they are doing OK. It could have been a lot worse last night against a crew that was ranked near the top in pressuring the QB.

...now about the run game...when we get the passing game working a little deeper down the field, more opportunities will come.
Hard to take this team too serious when the OLine is so bad

You're absolutely right, but it's a sort of Catch-22. The O-line was largely successful last night because Jones had an average time to pass of 2.4 seconds. That's blazing fast and he still paid for it. No disrespect to Tonges or Farrell, but getting Kittle's run blocking back will be a big help. Ultimately, I think the solution to this is going to have to be found on the O-line. They're the only guys that can solve the lack of push problem and until that happens McCaffrey and Robinson are going to continue having to break tackles at the LoS. It's hard to run the ball that way.

Indeed! All of this...

Brendel reminds me of Kilgore and sometimes worse

We need to meld those two together. Tonges has been a better run blocking and Farrell has been the better pass protector, which is the main reason Lynch signed him.

I re-watched the game tonight and the OL did not look as bad as it seemed live. The Rams front is very quick and fast. They are considered one of the best in the league. Still, no excuse, we need to get better.

Someone today quoted one of the OL as saying the Jags were tougher than the Rams.

How can we get the passing game going downfield when this Oline can't provide the time to let routes develop or give our QB time?

Mac thrived with short passes in the middle of the field, slants to Bourne and CMC catching 8 balls. If teams take that away we are done. Or if CMC misses time this offense will be horrendous.

Shanahans offense relies on play action passes set up by a dominant run game. We have neither right now. It also is dependant on run after the catch plays which we don't have.

If this team wants more explosive plays we need a better Oline. Plain and simple.
Trent Williams
Overall - 77.6 (8th out of 110)
Pass block - 68.7 (34th out of 110)
Run block - 78.5 (13th out of 110)

*TW is no longer dominant and able to make up for the rest of the guys being below average

Connor Colby
Overall - 57.8 (58th out of 102)
Pass block - 38.4 (83rd out of 102)
Run block - 65.3 (31st out of 102)

*What can you expect from a 7th round rookie? Bartch wasn't much better when he started

Jake Brendel
Overall - 72.9 (5th out of 48)
Pass block - 54 (28th out of 48)
Run block - 79.5 (3rd out of 48)

*Dependable but not dominant. Shanahan likes him but an "Alex Mack" type center would make this line so much better

Dominic Puni
Overall - 55.7 (61st out of 102)
Pass block - 55.6 (58th out of 102)
Run block - 53 (77 out of 102)

*Hopefully he is playing hurt because he has been BAD!

Colton McKivitiz
Overall - 69.9 (28th of 110)
Pass block - 73.9 (21 out of 110)
Run block - 68.1 (31 out of 110)

*League average and paid like a league average OT. If we want dominant we upgrade him but a starting LT is more important

If we want to be able to run the ball successfully we need to address LT because this is probably TW's last year and grab a quality LG and C and hope Puni gets back to how he played last year.

Complementary football.

If we had Cowing and Watkins on the field, defenses would have to account for their speed by backing off the safeties. That helps the run game and the OL.

...and we still need to improve the OL.
