Intersting, Thl...Martin would have a hard time calling line sets and blocking assignments, in that he can't block. Obviously this makes it a lot easier on the QB, who still should know who blocks where. Do you suppose Chip does this to make the QB have to worry about less? Still anxious to see this in action, wiht our own guys.

My projected starting five are broken into three phases.

phase 1:
Staley
beadles
kilgore
Tiller
Pears

phase 2 starts roughly around week 3:

staley
beadles
kilgore
garnett
brown

phase 3 roughly around week 9:

staley
tiller
kilgore
garnett
brown

Injuries?

I'm guessing the rookie starts on the left, to be next to Staley. Beadles, with more experience will probably be a better fit on the right, where the Niners lack a competent RT. In fact, it's not unlikely they pick up someone released by another team to hold that spot, given their current dismal choices.

In fact, it's entirely possible that there will be only two starters from this year starting on the OL next year (Staley and Garnett). Too many of the carryovers from the JH/JT era don't have the skills and/or stamina to be effective for a full season playing a Kelly offense. Maybe a combination of draft and FA infusions will fix that problem. Hopefully.

I'm hopeful for brown and tiller. I was impressed with tiller at times last year but i have to admit he has really slow feet. Not sure how he will do in kelly's offense.

Brown must've taken River Dance lessons during the offseason (he looked nimble as **** in that one drill). I think our starters will do a good job, but our depth is real young. We don't even have a clear back up center

well we have one, he just sucks....

I would hope they would give Thomas and Tiller a look for the backup center spot , who knows? , maybe Thomas could step in and be effective, you would think he would be 100 percent healthy and ready to fight, now that it's his 3rd season , you want quality from a 3rd round pick , I'm rooting for the guy to come to camp strong and prepared

Well, Kilgore is either healed and can revert to form of two yrs ago, or we need one of our OGs, Beadles, Tiller, Garnett, maybe Silberman,, or Thomas...one of them is going to have to snap if Kilgore doesn't have a better yr this yr ...and that includes, good health. OR, we could perhaps get a an OC as UDFA late, or trade for an OC.

Found this article about Chip having the center make the line calls. Makes sense since the QB might only have a few seconds at the LoS and it should be spent assessing other things.

http://igglesblitz.com/2013/06/communication-and-calls/
Some teams have the QB make line calls and protection adjustments. Other teams prefer the Center to do that. There isn't a right or wrong way, only what the coach prefers.
Chip Kelly's system gives the job back to the Center.
Here is how the protection is set on a given play.

"It's all depending on whether it's a three-down or a four-down defense," Kelce explained. "And then from there, depending on the protection, there's an object linebacker that the offensive line takes. And then off of that, then the running backs can all determine who they have, and the tight ends can determine who they have, and the quarterbacks understand who their hots are off of."

The QB can override the calls if he feels there is a need to do so, but for the most part the C will be getting things set. The move back to the C running things has nothing to do with individual players. This is just how Kelly likes things done.

Kilgore seems like a bright dude...I'm cool with this. I like it as it allows my focus on the QB to do other things. Thanks for the info.

I don't know of too many teams that have real quality backup centers? martin might turn into one with more strength (not holding my breath) I'd really like to see Thomas get some snaps at RT...he's got the size and length you would want and played tackle in college. I just think we have a log jam at OG.
NeeJ, I would be amazed if that hasn't already happened. Tiller, Thomas, Zane,....They have to already had a look see at C with more planned. If Kilgore is and stays healthy, then no sweat. Staying healthy are the operative words here. But even our 2nd first round pick may be asked to have a shot at C if Kilgore is nicked up.

NY, the only guy NOT in the running IMO is Martin, who I do not believe makes the final cut. If he does, then this team is no where near as good as I thot.
We should of paid Boone to play right tackle for us. We wouldn't be having this conversation now about who starts what and where and we could've fixed it next year with something a little more long-term ,Boone could also back up every other position and with all that Cap Space we were crazy not to do it. But I guess that's for another day, sorry guys, venting

And I think his tenure here effectively ended when he decided to listen to his agents and hold out of camp.

TBF, I think the stubbornness NOT to try him at his natural position is on par with the Mystery of Brandon Thomas.
