I'm still shocked over Willis retiring. Cant believe his career is ending so quickly, it felt like he was a rookie yesterday. If he wants out, so be it. He has the right to do what he wants in life. I wish him the very best. Amazing player and person.

Looking forward, the loss of a player like Willis would be crippling to most teams. I think our line backing core can survive this. We are in a unique position with Borland and Bowman on the roster, two studs. I thought Borland was playing linebacker at a higher level than anyone in the league when he was thrown into the lineup. Just hope he and Bowman stay healthy. Bowman is an all-pro LB himself, his return will be huge.

I agree SK! Plus, even if Bowman can't come back (might as well consider this, right?), Borland and Wilhoite played all year together and produced well...another year together, they'll be even better, more instinctual and I'm sure we'd add a dynamic ILB in the draft as well. There's also a few 3-4 and 4-3 ILB's out there too in FA such as Brandon Spikes, Rolando McClain, etc. (if still available).

I would rather he retire a Niner and let the team move on if it is something he is truly considering as an option. I believe the old cliche goes something like this, "Once you are thinking about retiring, you've already made your decision"

I'm in the same boat. If there is any doubt as to whether he wants to come back, then just hang 'em up. A wise man once said, "Get up and look, step in. Jump in. Let's go. All in."

It's hard enough to play when a player is giving 100% effort. To give anything less would be cheating himself and the team.

I doubt Willis would come back and give less than 100% but that said, as much as I will miss him, I rather he retires at this point and go to the next phase of his life where I'm sure he will be successful.

I wouldn't want Willis to come back, then in week 5 think that he made the wrong decision. But I know what you mean.
Seriously, why are some fans sh!tting on Borland. He did nothing but produce as a rookie
I just cant believe he would retire now. He only need a couple more ok seasons to make the HOF. He worked his whole career to meet that goal.

I'm lucky living in NYC, not very many other 49er fans. I bleed red and gold, these fair weather fans would likely end with me getting in a lot of fist fights in SF.

I wish Borland would have broke Lynch's damn collar bone. How come seattle never gets hurt playing the 49ers? It's always the 49ers getting hurt.

Patrick Willis's hands aren't necessarily on his hips yet, per source. Nothing is official till paperwork filed with the league office. @NinerTalk

Yeah, we need to at least consider the possibility Bowman wont, or is unable to return. I think he will. There's just too much change happening at once and I think Bowman is a keeper, if healthy. He's a critical piece to the new leadership core imo. Like golddigger pointed out, Baalke is money at drafting inside LBs. This position will likely always be well stocked. Borland will be a pro bowler next year, book it.

That's how I see it. Willis and Cowboy are retired in my book. If they change their minds, great, but I'm moving on unless told otherwise.
